Just hearing Liverpool could be in the Champions League as a result of Fenerbahce being expelled. When a team is expelled UEFA may give the place to the team with the highest co-efficient not currently in Europe. However - no nation can have more than four teams in the Champions League so all may rest on Arsenal losing?

Liverpool look set for a Champions League reprieve, but only if Arsenal slip up against Udinese. More at 6PM

cant see it happening to be honest.... would it not be another Turkish team through instead?

He's spot on with his point that it'll be given to the highest ranked losing qualifier.

That'd be like kicking out Fenerbache and reinstating them, most clubs in Turkey are dirty.

Hope so. I wanted to be free from Clive Tydsley's 'special nights at Anfield' for another season. :pac:

I've clearly had my head in the sand, why are fenerbache getting expelled?

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

    This is being tweeted around:
Who will replace Fenerbahçe: "The highest ranked country by coefficient to have their league champions go out at QR4" Atm it's FC København.

UEFA will have to confirm soon, but no-one knows when they'll do that.

Now I really want arsenal to win! :L

Turkish match fixing. Hence why no other team from Turkey

I would actually laugh if Liverpool got into the Champions League, would be great tho!

Liverpool seemingly have no chance. If Arsenal qualify 4 english teams in which is the maximum, if Arsenal don't qualify they are ahead of Liverpool in the UEFA rankings so they will qualify.

The rule about the coefficient is not clear, could be that Liverpool qualify regardless of Arsenal result. LFC would be considered "other" rather than England side (5 teams not possible) LFC have highest coefficient of non European footie (CL/EL) sides. Ranked 9th overall on 88.419

UEFA are said to be confirming it at 7.30

the only thing about that is Arsenal were previously entered and have been knocked out, LFC hasnt. not that it makes it likely to happen!

It'd be nothing short of a miracle but there could have been 5 English clubs in in 2006 though?

Well if that's confirmed it'll have a strange effect - Arsenals arse will unclench and they may play a decent game of footie!

Its a pretty farcical situation though isn't it? Not much point giving any team talk till you hear what UEFA say!

And there was me thinking we could totally concentrate and winning number 19 without european distraction.

I'm kinda hoping it doesn't happen other wise we'll never hear the end of it. On the other hand I'll be doing cartwheels if by some miracle we got in.

It'll be Trabzonspor. They are the highest rated team from Turkey and the rules say:
'A club which is not admitted to the competition is replaced by the next best-placed club in the same association'

Looks like Liverpool are not the only one's getting their hopes up

Hearing some Turkish side has been expelled from the Champions League & another team will be chosen to replace them. I'm quietly confident.

If "innovation", "grit" and "footballing pizazz" are the criteria for being chosen - then get ready West Ham Hammers - we're off to Europe.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/14656932.stm
Turkey's Football Federation has withdrawn national champions Fenerbahce from the Champions League because of an ongoing match-fixing investigation.

On Thursday the Turkish side were due to join 32 elite European clubs in the draw for the Champions League group stage being held in Monaco at 1645 BST.

It is unclear how Uefa will replace Fenerbahce, who are suspected of fixing matches to win the Turkish title.

Runners-up Trabzonspor have also been implicated in the match-fixing probe.

They were eliminated in the the Champions League qualifying rounds and are currently in a two-legged play-off to qualify for the group stage of the Europa League.

The decision was taken after the Turkish Football Federation held an extraordinary board meeting on Wednesday attended by Uefa's legal counsel for integrity, Pierre Cornu.

The Turkish match-fixing probe threatened to play havoc with Uefa's marquee club competition, with Fenerbahce having been scheduled to play six group matches from September to December.

Uefa had warned it would kick out any team proved to be involved in match-fixing and wipe its results from the record.

Oh jesus this could be an epic kick in the balls to arsenal if it works out they dont qualify and liverpool do.

if it turns out liverpool get the spot im heading to the nearest arsenal bar with the liverpool scarf to tell them how unfair the whole situation is.

we will need another striker this week.

Surely it'll be the highest ranked losing qualifer from this week...? Or an promotion for a UEFA cup team?

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

why would liverpool get in? did spurs not finish ahead of them last season no??????????

You can imagine the panic in UEFA HQ right now. 36 minutes to sort out this mess, with both Udinese and Arsenal getting changed and wondering what their fate is, or whether they'll even have to try a leg tonight.:pac:

    OK....

IF Arsenal won tonight, would Liverpool get the vacant spot? Them eing the highest co-efficient team not in Europe? I know the rule about more than 4 clubs, but they broke that already for Liverpool the year they came back as Champions. It would be hilarious to see my scouse mates supporting the Gunners!

Liverpool WILL NOT be in the CL. No chance.

Well thats the question. Would UEFA waive the 4 club rule or not. They'd want to be pretty sure before they barred a club because of it.

If Arsenal lose, I very much doubt they would be let back in. Technically they are in the CL, albeit the qualifiers. I think it was mentioned already, but haven't Copenhagen got a higher co-efficient anyway? So if anyone is going through as a "loser" it would be them?

I'll see if I can dig up those stats

I'd imagine the highest placed losers os the qualifiers will have a good chance to get in.

Or is that too obvious for Uefa?

So what would be the fairest, practical way of deciding who gets it?

The non-qualifier with the highest coefficient?

The highest coefficient team who have already been knocked out in the qualifiers?

The highest coefficient team who finished one place below CL qualification in their league?

What ever way its decided, people will complain

I'd have to go with the Highest co-efficient team not in the group stages of the CL.
Which means if Asenal beat Udinese, Liverpool would be through?

I think they'd complain most if a team that didn't even do enough to get in the EL got in.

The highest ranked team that failed to win their 4th round qualifier would make most sense.
