Had the computer left on while I went out, and when I came back, the screen had been turned off, as it should have. Normally it's just a case of moving the mouse, and it'd come back on, but it didn't this time. I turned the PC off, and when I started it again, I got no video at all. Just a black screen. The monitor is fine (tried it with a different computer).

The computer turns on, and runs the fan on the GPU full. After about 30 secs I get the BIOS beeps of 1-3 . The mb is an Asus P5N32_E sli deluxe. The codes say "No video card or bad video RAM Reseat or replace the video card". The card is a Nvidia 8800 GTS. I had this problem before, and the card was done for. Popped a new one in, and it was grand. But this time, I got a Sapphire Radeon HD6870, and put it in, but it's still the same. No video and the same beep codes.

I cleared the cmos, unplugged everything from the board but the ram. I also removed the ram, but I still can't get any video. Reading across the net, it seems I'm not alone, but no one has come up with a real solution.

I'm guessing that the mb is gone. Is there any way I can test it out, keping in mind I can't see anything on the screen. No bios. Nothing.

Only thing is, with the new video card, there's two sockets to plug in the power, and my psu has only one. Do I need the two sockets plugged in for it to work? If so, it'd probably mean it's the video card that's done for.

You need to plug in power to the two sockets, its probably a PCIe 6 pin connector, something like this is what you need:
    MOLEX-na-PCIe.gif
Did your video card come with anything that looks like that?

Edit: The new card will probably be ok if you just plugged one in and tried to boot, same thing happened me and it transpired when I was closing the case one of the connectors came out

Ive got 2 spare 8800gts... if you want to just replace and find out its not a MB problem.

yoyo. It came with two leads that plugs into the 4 ping normal power leads. I'm wary of trying it in the board again, in case it is the mb that's wrong. But I think it'll give it another go with the two power leads plugged in this time

fionny. That's for the offer. If you are flogging one of them I'd buy it from you if it is just a case of the card.

Edit. yep. That was it. I didn't have both plugs in. It boots fine now.

fionny. The Sapphire card is for a new rig I'm building, and I wouldn't mind having the computer we're talking about now running for the kids. If you are selling, I'm still interested. If not, no worries.

You will get a blank screen if the two power connectors are not plugged in, but the machine should appear to be on, ie lights come on. If lights dont come on just make sure the power going to the motherboard hasnt come loose/ check the 20/24 pin connector/cpu 4 pin connector to ensure this, be suprised what appears to be a dead system could be something as simple

You were dead right. All that was needed was to plug in the two leads. tbh, I forgot to look in the box, and it wasn' till I saw your post that I went looking. Thanks for the help, guys. Suppose I should change the thread heading to PC: Back from the Dead :D
