monitoring cable modem uptime

I've been having a lot of trouble recently with intermittent broadband drop outs, mostly due to the cable modem losing synch on the upstream connection. (downstream is always rock solid)

I've been using Pingdom.com to monitor the modem uptime for follow up with UPC, but as the modem itself does not respond to external pings I've had to set up a port forward to a server behind the firewall, which responds and hence allows uptime to be recorded.

I'd prefer to avoid this approach if possible, does anyone know if the modem will respond to a ping on any port or to a TCP or UDP query on any port? This would be more accurate as it would remove the router / server from the equation. (Also avoids opening up my lan to the outside world).

    Many thanks for any suggestions.

Update, it seems that it may not be possible to get a response directly from the modem, as it is monitored / provisioned on a private IP range accessible only to the cable operator. However, my router can be set to respond to ping on the public IP address, so this seems like a better option. Not ideal as a router failure will show up as downtime, but good enough.

    Uptime:
