Second hand SMax or Grand Picasso - worth waiting till new year ?

Missus in the family way (again) am looking to go for a second hand MPV.
(Will have 3 sprogs by Feb)

I've 10->12K to spend and would ideally like an SMax 2008 (Diesel, low tax) but list price these guys are about 17K.
I have a 2000 VW Golf who's cylinder head gasket has gone (yet another item in a long litany of problems). Mechanic says its not worth fixing the golf although the car is still drivable.
So I was considering hanging on a few months and hoping to use it as a trade in against eitheran SMax or a C4 Grand Picasso.
However rather than doing that in Oct I'm wondering if it's worth waiting till the new year will there be a significant difference ?
    Any advice appreciated

    Pete

I'd say no-one will want your trade in against a €15-20K car. If they pretend to offer you anything for it, you'd get the same or more off for cash. 2008+ diesels are the most desirable things second hand, so I wouldn't count on a big drop in price in January.

I bought an S-Max new in 08 (not selling though :P), and I thought the 2.0 was worth it over the 1.8: the 1.8's power delivery is very narrow: nothing, nothing, power, out of puff. Tiresome to drive.

Here's an '08 2.0 listed at €16K (mileage similar to my own). Check the service history, offer them cash.

Cheers for the reply. I did see an ad last week on carzone or cbg a crowd in Tipp (Mordaunt ?) who had 4 of them from 14995 apparently but the ad is gone.

Given that the VW Golf is hardly worth fixing and worth f*ck all as a trade in in this situation anyone know how I go about scrapping it - is there a better option (breakers yard) or will I end up having to pay money to scrap it ?
Its insured till Jan so maybe I should act now
    Any replies appreciated.

I'd just stick it up on donedeal or buyandsell for a couple of hundred if it's driving.

I'd pick up a late S-Max, possibly privately. They generally have no real issues and you could save yourself a lot over the revamped model.

The picasso is a good car, but neither as reliable or resellable in a few years.

I'd suggest sticking the Golf on Adverts and try and get a few hundred in as is condition.

...if your Golf is fubar'd, there's no point in waiting - any money fixing the Golf would be better spent on the new car, now.

I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”

The Golf in it's current state will be worth feck all as a trade-in. In fact a garage will probably have you think they are doing you a favour by taking it off your hands. In reality all they are doing is knocking a smaller amount off the price of the new car than if you walked in with no trade-in and looked for a straight deal discount. If you have the time and patience you could break it yourself and sell the parts seperately, if you don't want the bother then stick it on donedeal and someone else is bound to snap it up to break for parts.

Regarding the new car, garages don't automatically drop prices of their used cars on 1st January. They ususally start dropping them come November/December to make room for new stock arriving in January when people start trading up. If you can keep the Golf going until late October or November without putting money into it then I would hold out till then.
