    Kinda strange........

I tried to listen to a couple audio clips on that site and it was WAY TOO FAST!! (Both of them)

I have also always been annoyed that NASA shows us photos of mars LOOKING SO DARK!! (One colour) There is NO REASON to believe it doesnt look exactly like earth as far as colours, etc and on another site im on we have dsicussed this.......

Why dont they let us see how mars REALLY LOOKS??

Lets see, Earth has a blue sky, Mars has a red sky because of dust. We have red sunsets, Mars has blue sunsets.
Red dust is red, and Mars has quite a bit of that stuff. See above.

Earth is (as an average) 150 million kms from the sun, Mars averages 228 million kms and therefore receives less sunlight, (at twice the distance an object receives one quarter of the light).

    What is your agenda?

Can I complain about the secrecy surrounding the manned base on Jupiter?

Looks plenty blue in this photo.

    Can anyone then explain this

So NASA are trying to hide the real colours of Mars for some reason and apparently alter every single photo they release and keep every single scientist working on Mars all over the planet quiet about this.
But then they hold a press conference and show one of the unaltered photos which blows their cover for some reason, then allows photos to be taken at the press conference and then releases those photographs on the internet...

Which part of this makes sense exactly?

    The non-silly explanations are:
    1. It's simply a photo of Earth the speakers are using to demonstrate a point about how Earth and Mars are similar or about how they test their equipment.
    2. It's an effect of the projector they are using which is messing with the colours of the image.
    3. It's an effect of the camera used to take the picture.

The fact that the conspiracy theory site doesn't give the photo any context should be a red flag.
    Can anyone then explain this

    mars-spirit-sundial.gif
Again the site does not give a context or a source to either photo and either could have been altered by an over zealous conspiracy theorist.
And again the conspiracy theory doesn't make a whole bunch of sense.

They go to all that work to alter the image but fail to take out this one thing that gives the entire game away.
There's simply no way they could be that incompetent yet somehow manage to keep thousands of scientists all quiet.

More rational explanations could be that they simply changed the colours before launch for some reason. Or that the "on earth" one is from one of the duplicates or models with have the wrong colour.

And if you read that you find that the "true colour" pictures are produced by a conspiracy theorist who believes that NASA is doing the altering.
How do we know he's simply not just doing what he's accusing real scientists of doing and processing the pictures to give the wrong colour?

    :D:D

Option #1 All the scientists working on and analysing these pictures are hiding things and altering pictures (without a single whistle blower in 36 years).
Option #2 A conspiracy theorist with a simple agenda, namely publicity and money is altering pictures.
    Hmmm......Occam's razor springs to mind.
Looks plenty blue in this photo.

    images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTDibQVmOSbfNlYEbI3dOnh_biIrlpYXXIM2hcvDxy1lO19Twcmjw

Looks blue here too, it's what sunset on Mars looks like.
When the Sun is low in the martian sky therefore passing through more atmosphere, the sky appears blue.
You see folks there are very simple explanations for these things IF you ask the right people. :D
(PS, All shadows are not parallel ;))

Have either of you Dude111 or AugustusMinimus looked at Mars yourselves through a good telescope and seen one of those rather large dust storms moving across the surface of the planet, red dust is red.

Can you explain to me then why the JPL website carried two versions of the same photo, except in one version, Mars looked much redder than in the other ?

Also, why is the sky of Mars constantly red ? Surely there aren't dust storms all the time everywhere on the planet ?

I'm sure I can take a crack at it if you can point to the photos you're talking about.
And can you explain, if NASA are trying to trick us all about the true colour of Mars, why they post such photos on their website since it gives the game away so easily?

And what about the other points I made, any comment on those?

There is always dust in the Martian atmosphere, the Viking landers measured this in the 70's.
Below is a picture of what suspended particles do to a sky on Earth, but here we have an atmosphere that regularily washes itself clean, on Mars there is (relative to Earth) very little precipitation, it is too cold for the atmosphere to hold much water vapour, consequently the dust is not cleared like it would be here.

    images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTbhDx_CWaB5gpfbvguxpcdhfPEDS4-akLgKxkAkgDJG3_GH-he

The Martian air is very thin compared to here on Earth so there is less absorbtion of red light and scattering of blue by gas, while the dust particles absorb blue light and reflect the red.
Spirit, Opportunity and Pathfinder/ Sojourner landed close to the equator in very dusty areas.
As we explore more of the surface there is no reason we won't see many different sky conditions. In fact if there is little dust in the atmosphere the sky would be a much deeper blue than we see on the surface of Earth, more like what you see from a high flying jet.

Buck Rogers was there at the start. Flash Gordon was busy at the time so couldn't go.

To get back on topic (and away from the silly conspiracy pseudoscience tangent) didn't Mars have a working microphone on the Phoenix polar lander in 2008?

I never heard about (excuse the pun!) what happened with the microphone part of the mission.

And so life after the shuttle begins.... didn't we have a thread saying what this forum would descend into after the program ended? Most people jokingly said conspiracy theories....
In any case, I think the sky on Mars is actually green. There's a whole book that says so http://books.google.com/books?id=K3JEPgAACAAJ&source=gbs_book_other_versions
