It is currently national heritage week
National Heritage Week 2011 will run from the 20th to the 28th of August.

Search for events in your area here
    http://www.heritageweek.ie/index.php/whats-on/event-search/

I can recommend the railway exhibition in the library in Cavan town. It is well worth a visit.

Feel free to highlight any events visited on this thread.

National Heritage Week - then we can all go back to forgetting about our heritage for another year. A load of Heritage Council inspired PR guff. New website: http://www.heritageweek.ie/ for one week!!! Huge (288 page guidebook) given away free. Whatever this whole nonsense is costing would have been better given to a worthwhile but non-sexy cause like the so-called National Transport Museum in Howth. Anyway it's all over on the 28th September and then we can all sleep safely in our beds knowing that our Heritage is safely protected.

Just a few of 2010/11 Irish Heritage Events

Lissadell House closed to the public

    Fry Model Railway closed

Fernhill Gardens (Sandyford) sold to developer

You are correct on these and I think from your previous posts that you share the view that the treatment of Irish architectural heritage is a disgrace, particularly when compared to the national trust in the UK.
The heritage council deserve criticism but there are locally organised events throughout the country that deserve to be publicised. Alot of the heritage protection in Ireland is carried out by local interest groups who have a genuine interest in preservation. For example there are things like tours of former workhouse and other similar events that are happening locally that people may not be aware of. They are largely unrelated to the heritage council and without local awareness and support they will cease.

I wonder what heritage sites tie up with recent threads or posts ???

At least they changed the week for a time when most families could actually go and visit. Up to this year the heritage week was the same week as the kids back to school.

It is in the Irish times today that Fernhill is being sold to Dunlaoghaire Rathdown county council, surely good news for the residents of the area
