Curious about slot machines

Are slot machines illegal? During the planning permission phase of the Tipperary Venue I read people posting that Dr Quirkeys emporium was breaking the law.

Now I have seen other people applying for certificate to operate fruit machines, coin pusher and UFO Catcher machine.

Application refers to section 15 Gaming and Lotteries Act 1956.

I do not go to these places so do not know the difference. Are some legal? What is the difference, if any, between Dr Quirkeys and fruit machines, etc

    They're not illegal.

The granting of license to use them has a number of conditions mostly relating to access - an area that does not permit the entry of those under 18.

They may have been breaking the law by having them in an open access area or similar.
