I have just finished Brotherhood which I really enjoyed.
I have seen these which I really liked The Shield, The wire, Sopranoes, Band of brothers, The pacific. Boardwalk empire and spartacus

Watched first season of The Unit (it was ok) not bothered about watching anymore. Don't really like Mad men, hospital, Sci Fi, vampire or political dramas. Don't really like Law and order either.

Have Sons of Ananarchy and about to start that and also rome

Does anyone have any other recommendations?

    French crime drama called 'Spiral'

Very gritty and disturbing but it's excellent!!

Breaking Bad and Dexter. True Blood is worth watching too.

yeah breaking bad (on season 4) and dexter (going into season 6) are great shows, also the west wing (7 seasons) is a great show if you havent seen it, as is OZ (6 seasons), and californication (4 seasons) is another good one,

youll deffinate like at least 2 of them, your best bet is to read there premises and decide,

I watched series one of walking dead recently its very good i really enjoyed it.

Also watched entourage season 1 really easy show to watch 20ish minutes per episode so you get through the series quick enough.

Also like other said, cant go wrong with breaking bad, dexter or californication either, all great shows..

Series I have watched in the last 12 months and enjoyed:

Lights Out.... retired heavyweight boxing champion comes back from retirement. Just 1 Season made but worth a watch if you are mildly interested in boxing.

Chicago Code, and Blue Bloods, if you are into Cop dramas. Blue Bloods starts slow enough but gets good. Also The Killing is very good and is back for Season 2 soon.

My favourite of recent months was Game of Thrones. Well worth a watch, Season 1 just finished, think they are making 4 seasons.

Of the others mentioned Dexter and Sons of Anarachy are good choices.

Or if you are into a comedy, Rules of Engagement is a must see!

modern family is so good season 3 in september, the walking dead is great season 2 in october. Glee is good, but you either like it or hate it ;) season 3 september too. i actually watched all of teen wolf season 1 and actually liked it. its a lot better than you would think. it looks chessy and stupid but i was bored one evening and decided to watch it and enjoyed it. my parents really like breaking bad,mad men, dexter, the good wife, californication, game of thrones nd a few others. i heard vampire diaraies, true bloods and supernatural are good too. that should keep you goin:D

More votes for Deadwood, Oz and Breaking Bad.

    You will not be disappointed.

Game of Thrones is superb. I'm not a fan of that genre by any means but it's a must watch.

    Deadwood.

Definitely another for Luther. Recently finished its 2 season there, with about 9 episodes altogether between the 2, I think. The bad guys in Season 2 are especially messed up!

    Drama

    House
    Dexter
    Criminal Minds

    Comedy

    The Office (USA)
    The Big Bang Theory
    Chuck

All in that order for me.

I'd recommend Justified. A modern day western set in the USA's deep south. 2 seasons have been broadcast already.

I watch most of the first season and never really warmed to it. The pilot was very good but I felt it went down hill after that. The whole show has somewhat of a CSI/Criminal Minds feel about it, with quippy jokes and the token black character with 'attitude'. Plus I think Timothy Olyphant's character of Raylan Givens isn't very original, he's too close to Seth Bullock from Deadwood.

    Some very good suggestions

Watched some of Breaking bad but didn't really like it
Have watched a few episodes of OZ must watch more

True blood - not my kind of thing or sci fi stuff is Game of Thrones sci fi

Blue bloods watched the first few episodes the whole bit about basically every part of the Policing system and legal covered by one family did not really like- seriously a rookie, detective, chief of police and the DA all in one family

I have watched all of the Office US and brit - great show, same with Entourage including Season 8 prob my fav show

Don't really like Medical dramas so rules out House

Did not really like CSI, Criminal minds etc

    Also really like Spartacus

Quite enjoy Chuck but prob not gritty enough for me

Watched Luther on TV which was good

Watching How I met your mother which is excellent

Have heard about Dexter and might give Deadwood a look. Welcome all suggestions.

By the way currently Watching The World at War which is Brillant made in the 1970's about WW2 so has lots of interviews with people who was central to the War.

The Black Donnellys was laughable. They tried to make a Mob show
for fans of The OC. Awful piece of television.

    The Closer.

If you're looking for comedies, it doesn't get much better than Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Summer Heights High and Season 1 of Eastbound and Down are excellent.

Edit: Not a comedy, but forgot to mention Tremé in my previous post. A superb HBO/David Simon production.

    Damages is good

While I enjoyed the first season I can see why people might think it's a bit like CSI and those episodic crime shows. But you should definitely stick with it. Season 2 is absolutely stunning. They dropped the stand-alone criminal of the week stories for a series long plot. For me it's the best season of TV I've seen in years.

is Game of Thrones sci fi

Its not sci-fi, its a fantasy drama based in medieval times. Has kind of a lord of the rings feel to it. It has gotten really good reviews, and even if you are not into LOTR you may well still enjoy it.

The Sopranos in Middle Earth is how I heard it described.

    try Generation Kill.
about a book of the same name of a reporter sent in with a unit of recon marines in the first wave into Iraq in 2003.
it was done by David Simon of The Wire.

very good in my opinion, and seeing as you have watched The Wire, BoB and The Pacific i'd say you'll enjoy it.

Never heard of Summer Heights high might look at that.

seeing as re-enactments seem to be an obvious choice so far, im going to throw in the borgias.........

only started on sky atlantic three weeks ago, but have to say im enthralled, and love it so far.

on a more light hearted note, i reccomend Wilfred, with elijah wood.......hilarious remake of the australian series and well worth a watch.

    Weeds - outstanding!

Season five has just finished on Sky Atlantic - the US are on season 7. Funny, dramatic and real snappy writing. Worth it for kevin nealon's character Doug alone.

Don't think anyone has mentioned Arrested Development yet. It's a quality comedy.

    Just ask Dr. Tobias Funke;

Later seasons of The Unit definitely improved, maybe not hugely, but a bit anyway. Strike Back is vaguely similar but better done IMO

You can watch peepshow on 4OD too, I've started watching deadwood for the first time over the last two weeks, it's another good show.

Give breaking bad a chance it is really, really, really good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,455 ✭✭✭maudgonner

One more! You mentioned that you liked Band of Brothers and The Pacific? Well, some of the same people behind those were involved in From the Earth to the Moon, a series that chronicled the Apollo missions to the moon.

(Basically Band of Brothers is to Saving Private Ryan, as From the Earth to the Moon is to Apollo 13 - Tom Hanks stars in a movie, then makes an epic mini-series on the same subject :))

I enjoyed Game Of Thrones and Oz. Justified is supposed to be brilliant as well, but I haven't started watching it. Give The Wire a go too. I also love the Aussie crime series Underbelly

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,986 ✭✭✭✭mikemac

    Lights Out was mentioned already

Not a well known show but well worth trying
Just one series, it was clear early one it wouldn't be renewed

It gets better as it goes on, give it a try. To do with boxing

And for a realy old one, Murder One
If you like legal dramas, it's the best around
Well over a decade old at this stage

Jericho too, bit of a strange one but it works

Rescue Me, early seasons were pretty good, final season is currently airing in the US, not everyones cup of tea, I loved the 1st season of Dexter but fell behind since so haven't being following it.

It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is a great comedy. Very original and at 22 mins an episode it's very easy to watch.

After a slow start the US comedy Community gets excellent. Chevy Chase plays an absolutely hilarious character.

Closer to home the new Alan Partridge vehicle (Mid Morning Matters) was great too.
