Broke my wrist, how long before I can swing a club?

I should say from the outset that this is not a request for medical advice!

Just as I began to find some form on the course again ths year I broke the scaphoid bone in my left wrist playing 5-aside last week. Gutted!

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced the same and if it took long to get back playing golf once the cast was off? If it heals correctly my cast is due off in 5 weeks, but unsure if I can start playing again straight away. Has anyone experienced any "after affects" on their golf swing caused by a previously broken wrist (pain, ability to hinge the wrist properly, anything like that?). Just worried that it won't be quite the same when I get back playing.

In the interest of making sure I get back playing better rather than sooner I wonder would it be a safer decision to pack up the clubs for a couple of months of rest? Dreading such a long lay-off, especially since I've been playing 3/4 rounds per week since April.

    Thanks in advance!

Dont want to sound like an a**hole but do not listen to any medical advice that is relayed to this post pfiddy. Go to a doctor and listen to him. I would bet you would only prolong the injury if you listened to my advice. The 60euro spent on the doctor will save you a lot of money in the long run imo

Tough luck mate, I know your pain only too well having broken my ankle badly almost two years ago. Had to have surgery and still have a good deal of metal in the ankle. Cant give you advice on your injury or recovery except to take your time and allow it to fully heal before you stress it. Use the down time to practice putting and then chipping before you get onto full shots. I found the mental torture of having to lie around the worst part, at least you can walk and build up your fitness so its not too bad. I couldnt play for 4 months and even after that I wasnt realy striking it or getting onto my front foot fully for nearly a year Id say.
    Best of luck.

i broke mine for the second time in may 2010 (on my wifes birthday - wasn't i the lucky guy telling her that her birthday dinner was going to be a bag of tayto's in A&E!!!)

Anyway, its a right pain, literally! Best to take your time letting it heal. Mine still hurts when i am doing anything in the cold weather and ocassionaly when playing golf.

Not a doctor so I am just wondering if you can still do things golf related in order to ease the frustration. Putting, it's supposed to be a shoulders thing and the hands, wrists and arms should be "quiet".
How about reading and planning your rehab and return, planning a practice routine for when you get the go ahead.
Above all try to keep your general fitness up and do your physio routine religously, I know this from experience having gone through a major major op not too long ago.

All i gotta say is, dont listen to a doctor who will say something along the lines of "You wont be able to play for 3-4 months" i broke my leg playing football, and 3 weeks after my cast was off my leg was strong enough to be running around at an ok pace, i did feel strain but it was something, i think its all down to how your body heals and if it was a really serious break, Sometimes you could be stiff for weeks, but when i came out of the cast i walked straight out of the hospital. I feel ur pain, and hope it heels fast gl !

    hey ,

I broke mine 2 years ago in June playing 5 -a - Side aswell . Played my first game of golf mid September which was 3 months . Had a cast for 7 weeks and then did 4 physio sessions over 3 weeks. Followed this up with a couple of days on driving range hitting wedges at first and graduating to full driver shots which was on advice from Physio.
I still worry when playing a ball out from a bunker if its close to the edge or off hard ground.
As previous poster said , its still sore today if I play a full 18 in cold weather.

On a positive note Im playing better now than before I broke it !!!!

Tell the physio you play golf as they got me to do exercises around the motion of swinging a club (even gave me a broom handle which was funny !!)

Depends on your age. I would say if your 20 you'll be back in 8 weeks and if you're 50 you can make that 6 months. The healing process is very slow as you get older :(

If you're a member of a club you can get of leave of absence for such injuries where you dont pay for the period you're out of action. Normally taken off the following year's subs.

Bizarre, I broke the exact same bone in my left wrist playing 5-a-side on Sunday. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread for updates. 2/3 months without golf - head wrecking!
