It depends what you mean by chat up line, and depends how and by whom it's delivered. Some people are charming and can use words to attain their goals very successfully.

They don't work on me though. I like the awkward, thoughtful type.

They're supposed to make you laugh, therefore breaking the ice blah, blah, blah.
Maybe they work on some girls, but not a chance of them working on me.
If the guy is really hot, it doesn't matter what he says though, so maybe that's why people think they work?

Its a proven mathematical fact that the effectiveness of chat up lines is inversely proportional to the elapse of time divided by the percentage of alcohol consumed.

Or in lay mans terms - The nearer the end of the night and the more drink taken, the better they work (So I'm told anyway).

I only tried it once when I was younger, surprisingly it worked but I cringed when I thought about it after and never tried it again. Just being yourself works much better.

never used them. and up until recently thought none had been used on me, boards taught me otherwise though usually i just get starts of conversations when i'm being chatted up, can't imagine too many people actually use them.

Yes and no: If a girl is attracted to you, it really won't matter what you say to her, and if its a chat up line she'll just laugh thinking you're being funny. If she isn't attracted to you, then it pretty much doesn't matter what you say she's not going to be interested anyways...

It doesn't really matter that much what you say. Women aren't really listening, they're paying attention to how cool you are from things like voice tone, body language, dress sense etc. which reflects how relaxed you are which reflects how successful you are with women which relfects how successful her offspring would be if you banged her.

That's pretty much false. You can make women attracted to you if you're charismatic, funny and interesting, even if she wasn't attracted to you at first.
