The quest for a sub 45min 10km

About this time last year I decided to dust off my old runners and try to get fit again. After a 30 min 5km with multiple stops I pushed on throughout the winter and after a few Sprint tri's am now doing Olympic distance in the latter part of the summer. My 10km run time is now just under 45 mins. The problem is I'm not sure how to push it towards the 40 min time. The books all say to concentrate on speed and hill work. I have tried this but the trouble is I have found my best gains in time have come from increasing distance and slowing my pace up to and beyond half marathon distance. This has culminated in me being able to push a good 10km pace on my 'lazy' nights. I've decided to go up to half ironman distance next year and want to push on with the gains I've made in the past year on my running. Do those of you in the know feel that I can improve my times by staying long or do I need to persist with more speed work over shorter distances?
