hi i have recently experienced bleeding gums and am interested to know if this procedure is covered under the medical card and if not has anyone got a rough estimation on what the cost of a dental procedure would be to cure bleeding gums.i havnt been near a dentist in years so any help would be welcome.

    Thanks

    John

You may just need a simple cleaning and some flossing technique. Med cards don't cover hygiene but it would only be about 40 euro. If it something more than just gingivitis then you can get the dentist to apply for protracted periodontal treatment on the medical card, I dont know how successful dentist are at getting approval for this but no harm in trying.

Hi fitzgeme does it cost to see the dentist for a check up for first visit?how much are check up visits to the dentist and are they covered on the medical card.also does it matter what denist you go to for medical card entitlement or are there designated dental centres for medical card holders?

    Thanks

1 med card check up per year. if you've already seen a dentist since january, then you may have to pay to be seen again. all you can do is call them and ask if they accept medical card patients.

it's one exam every 12 mths. unless the receptionist is a complete clown they'll ask for your pps no to check on line that you haven't been elsewhere;)

You'd be surprised the amount of med card holders who feel they need a second opinion...............!

Most of the online information on the HSE website is out of date. Shambles. Good luck OP sure you will get sorted.

im currently having dental treatment done and i recently had my medical card approved also..
ive been talking to the dentist and apparently you are entitled to the folowing

    - the first consultation visit
    - 2 fillings
    - 1 Extraction

This is what they will cover you for every 12 months

and you can also get a denture once every 5 years

I also was worried with bleeding gums so i booked appointment with hygienist,it cost me 70 euro and it lasted mayb 20 mins.she did some cleaning and just said i need to floss more and i should be fine, mayb thats all you need to do. either way a hygienist is not covered by the medical card

the treatment they now cover for people with dental issues is patethic,be lucky you dont need a root canal or any wisdom teeth pulled, that stuffs not covered

the amount of extractions is only limited by the amount of teeth in your mouth. definitely not limited to just 1.
