I accepted an offer for a tsm of economics and maths today.

As you may appreciate, I'm very excited to start and get some more info. I'm just wondering if by any chance anyone would know when the info packs will Ve sent out?

Very soon. You needn't worry too much. Fresher's starts on the 19th, you'll register on the 20th, and lectures start on the 26th.

That's pretty terrible timing.. Seeing as that's a pretty common combination by the sounds of it?

Same here, they sent me pack 5 for general science instead of pack 7.

Yep it (Pack 5) finally came in the post today. From what I can see I just send back the FRS1 and GF1 forms for now. That sound right? lol

So confused by these orientation packs! whats the difference between them? And when do we send them back?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 95 ✭✭AgathaK

I think all different faculties have different packs, am I right?

If you go here http://www.tcd.ie/orientation/pre-arrival/packs/ it has a list of the different packs. There's a different one depending on what course you're doing so I'm guessing the difference is that they have information on the meetings and registration related to your course, rather than on all the different courses.

As to when to send forms etc back, I'm thinking that its just the fees ones that have to be sent back now  Hoping that someone else says the same here lol..

Thanks for the info! Im still waiting to see if Im going to get a grant, so this is all quite confusing!

Im quite confused by the fees bit :/ when do they have to be paid by?... how do we pay them?... do you need to do something with the page about the fees in the orientation pack? :o any info would be appreciated! :D

Me too, it says to send them both together (FRS1 and GF1), but I still don't know if the grant is finalised yet, so I can't fully fill it in :/ Is anyone else in this situation?

Unless you're non-EU or don't qualify for free fees in some other way, the government pays your tuition fees..

Yeah I'm still waiting to hear back about the grant too and will be for another 2 or 3 weeks by what I was told when I rang about it today

It does say on that GF1 form that "Students who accept a place as grant/award holders and are subsequently deemed ineligible for a higher education grant/educational award may be subject to a replacement fee..." so I think from that, that I can send in that form in the hope that I get awarded the grant but will have to pay an extra fee if I end up not getting it. What do the rest of you think? lol

They must have ran out of pack 7s and thought they'd get away with sending us pack 5. Sure who are we to know we got the wrong one? :p Sent them a strongly worded e-mail... I could download it but I enjoy being awkward :pac:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 52 ✭✭OrlaB12693

oooooohhhkayy... :L thank you! i feel quite stupid now.... but i was all thinking i didnt have to fill out that FRS1 for some reason.... so just to be clear (cuss im obviously a bit slow) If im just a plain old regular girl from ireland, i dont pay fees, i just fill out the FRS1 form and bring it with me to orientation?.... or do i have to send it off before that?... (:

Oh and about the GF1 form, about the grants... i have that filled out and i assume i just bring that with me to orientation aswell?... even though i still havnt heard back from the grant people?...

Ugh, we've to send them both together? I've already sealed the envelope with FRS1 and nothing else... :P

Regarding the grant - I went to my county council today and the lady there gave me a letter saying that I applied for a grant, and she told me to give it into the college if they're going to be asking for reg money. So I guess if you go and ask for such letter... But I suppose they won't be looking for money until we actually register as students? Aaaagh this is so confusing it's actually making me mad. :/

Yea, as ickle firsties, they must have been sure that we wouldn't notice the lack of vetting forms or the fact that there was no timetable for our course, despite there being a timetable for TR071 and TR073... but no TR072 :(
Being awkward would be fun, but I have really bad luck with forms in the post, so i downloaded to be safe
    :)

Yeah, that's what I got from the little paragraph about it in the booklet :) The whole thing is rather confusing though, isn't it? :/

I think you'll need to send them off, cos it'll be a bit late by registration day, I'd say.
They give a phone number at the bottom, some other users have said they're gonna give the office a ring tomorrow to see what the story is..

    It's not confusing... It's super confusing. :/
On reading the info about free fees payable by the minister for edu & skills I got a question on my mind... If I am not from Ireland, but I'm an EU student does that mean I qualify for the free fees?

we have to fill out the FRS1 (and GF1 if you are getting a grant) and send them now, as your fees on their database are full fees (couple of thousand euro)... until they receive that FRS1 form, you won't be down for the 2085 euro or however much you have to pay

also we have to pay before our registration day (friday 23rd for science) and bring receipt/proof or else we can't register

AFAIK it's nothing to do with being Irish or not, it's whether or not your EU or Swiss, or whatever else it says at the top of the FRS1.. You should be okay for fees though :)

Sure, if I filled in something wrong they'll get in contact with me... :D Because for now I just give up, it's too confusing.

Exactly! It's not OUR fault if it's too confusing!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 95 ✭✭AgathaK

1st years should be getting little colour coded orientation packs, with instructions how to fill them in from the bottom to the top, haha :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 63 ✭✭steve84

Yea the county council grant office said today they will post me out that letter to say I've applied for it. I think I have to send that letter, the FRS1 form and GF1 form back to TCD asap. Will ring there in the morning to check for sure tho :o

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 95 ✭✭AgathaK

But then how are we suppose to fill in the GF1 form if we're still not in receipt of the grant? :/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 63 ✭✭steve84

I may be wrong but I think I have to fill in the details of where I have applied to for the grant on the GF1 form, get a letter from there to show that I have applied for the grant from them and then fill in the FRS1 form and send those 3 things in?

See my earlier post where I quoted the end of the GF1 form. That's where I'm guessing from. I'm ringing TCD in the morning before I send anything anyway..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 95 ✭✭AgathaK

Let us know what they say in here, will ya? :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 63 ✭✭steve84

Will do! Chat to ye tomoro when hopefully we'll all be less confused :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 63 ✭✭steve84

Ok so just off the phone with the fees office and was told to send in the FRS1 form now and send in the GF1 form now also.

When I said I'm still waiting to hear if I'm getting the grant or not she said still send in the GF1 now but when I find out the council's decision on the grant to let them know asap. If I get the grant it'll be fine and if I get turned down on the grant I'll have to pay the reg fee myself.

Hope that's of some help. :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 95 ✭✭AgathaK

Yes, I was curious myself so rang them this morning too. :D Same story as above. :) So I guess I've to open that bloody envelope... LOL. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 52 ✭✭OrlaB12693

Emmmm... ok....Well its good to get that cleared up! :)
... and is the registration fee the €2085 that everyone has to pay or the tuition fees that the government is supposed to pay? (:
