    Hey Y'all,

I'm kinda' looking for a synth\module that has a nice fat analog type sound for bass. Have quite a few soft synths at the mo', which are cool and all, but I'd like to try something a little different. :)

I guess my budget is 600 euro (700 at absolute max!). I kinda' want something that I can do some wiggling an sound creation with. :) There's doesn't have to be a keyboard per se, as I'm not the best player anyway, and virtually always work with the piano roll.

    Things I've been scoping recently.
DSI Mopho\Tetra - Not really enough control on the surface. Pity, as they sound cool.
Roland Gaia - Which everyone seems to h8 because it's not a true analog (which I didn't think sounded all that bad).
JP 8000 - Which I'm very tempted by, but somewhat reluctant to purchase, because I can only get a second hand one, and would be afraid that I'd have to get replacement parts for it or something. I've bought second hand gear in the past and it hasn't worked out alt that well for me tbh. Plus, I've know idea how much you should pay for one of these now days.
Doepfer Dark Energy - Prefer something with two Oscillators tho'.
Waldorf Blofeld - Which I had at one point, but sold as it wasn't really what I was after.
Nord Rack X2 - Heard some good reports about it, but I know very little about them tbh.

Anyway, apologies for the long post, but if anyone has any ideas that would be cool. :)

    Ta',

    Rob.

PS - Hope this thread isn't too similar to the 106 Vs Evolver. :(

    Hey Rob,

Just thought I'd give you my opinion since I had the same trouble deciding on this myself a few months back. In the end I went with the DSI Mopho keyboard version and I have to say I love it and I feel the control is more than adequate because of the all round application of the synth. the bass sounds and what you can create on this little bad boy will more than satisfy any bass lover especially really low end stuff with it's sub bass oscillators. I think it an amazing piece of kit whatever style your doing it's got it all and at a fraction of the price some of it's competitors which like you say you can only really get second hand and that will run all sorts of problems and cash.

Anyway just a thought good luck with whatever you decide.

    Matt

you would probably pick up a new moog slim phatty for 700.

If you held off and saved up another few bob to say a grand you will be in the market for some interesting synths. Mfb are bringing out the dominion soon which is circa 700 and has an amazing filter on it. Analogue solutions leipzig s looks good, personally these are the 2 synths i would be weighing up - excellent options, very capable of many different sounds and i know they will sound good also not overly sold either which for me is a good thing

Not blown away by the DSI sound these days myself but each to their own!

    Hey guys,

Many thanks for the replies. :) So much to choose form!

@HM, that Mopho sound pretty damn cool - you can really get some mad sounds out of the DSI stuff. It's cool that it has more control too.

@PW, Wow!! That Leipzig sounds so brutal! In a good way...:D That's very much the dark sound I'd be into too. How do you think that would compare to something like the slim Phatty?

    Thanks again,

    R.

It does sound brutal but it can sound lovely and warm too, i tried the keyboard version out in Berlin and i was impressed, the build qulaity of the phatty will be better, im not a fan of the knobs analogue solutions put on their gear, feel a bit plastic to me but the sounds out of their gear are great, you could also check out the Telemark too, which is in your price range, again build quality could be better but the sounds are great, the Leipzig s has a built in sequencer, personally id go for this myself, regardless of the build quality!! Moog has that sound, some like it some don't, i am kinda on the line with it, you could argue the slim phatty and the leipzig are quite similar but id still opt for the leipzig personally!

The mopho for me does not compare to any of the synths mentioned above - for me anyway!

    Hey PW,

Originally, I was also looking at the Doepfer Dark Energy and the Vermona Lancet too. They both sound cool, but not as good as the bigger boys.

I still can't get over that Leipzig - It sounds so cool... I've never heard a soft synth that can come close to this (imho).

So it's a choice between the Leipzig or Moog slim phatty I guess, but I'm definitely leaning towards the Leipzig. :)

    Thanks again man,

    R.

cool, glad to help :) Dark energy would be good too if you bought a few modules with it but you would eed to buy the psu board as well as the modules and maybe a small case, plus modular synthesis is daunting for the beginner but well worth it in the long run, anyway the leipzig is a very good straight forward choice! enjoy!
