What a patriot - our former Minister Science and Technology now advising Russians how to get business:

Any chance he would put something back into Ireland ...........

Sums him up really I suppose?!

It's referring to Conor Lenihan not Brian.

What a whinge of a thread. He lost his seat so he got another job. What else would you expect him to do?

What you do not expect a former Minister to do is to compete to attract investment AWAY FROM IRELAND.

Last year Minister Lenihan told a Science Foundation of Ireland summit that
“The relevance and value of science must be continually communicated to the general public, and how it is articulated is vital in defining how science is perceived. The task of communicating the message that ‘science matters’, that ‘science delivers’ and, above all, that investment in science in Ireland is value for money and an integral part of our economic development must be addressed by all across the scientific community.”

He was far from the best aswell

Remember his rant on Vincent Browne? Just search Conor lenihan on you tube for it

Also he may not have been a major minister when the worst mistakes were made but he supported them as a backbench td

I don't expect anything from him. He is a private individual. He was rejected by his constituents as a public representative. Unless there are any Dail rules that preclude him from taking up certain employment then he is doing nothing wrong. He owes Ireland nothing.

Anyone know how much of a pension he is on?

    Wwll maybe his aunt ' Mammy O Rourke' might have some gems of wisdom for us on we might exoect of people in public life :;

“Mary O'Rourke was on Newstalk radio's Breakfast Show...She told Ger Gilroy: "Can I say on Enda Kenny, I cannot believe a leader of a very proud party called Fine Gael committed such a disloyal treasonous act? The Taoiseach was out of the country. He was flying the flag for Ireland. As I sit here at my desk, I've a small Irish flag on my desk to remind me of the honour of being a member of the Oireachtas. He's doing business for Ireland, he's flying the flag . . . What has enraged me, absolutely enraged me is the idea that you could commit such an act of treason that you would seek to pull him down while he is away doing the Government's business, the country's business."
    http://www.politics.ie/forum/fianna-fail/24704-fianna-fail-mary-orourke-guilty-treason.html

So the O Rourke line on patriotism seems to be that even voicing criticism of a Taoiseach whilst he is out of the country is 'an act of treason '.
So what would she make of a former irish Minister for Science trying to take investment away from Ireland ?

I'd say he's furthering the geo-political interests of the EU by doing what he's doing...

Russia will be much less of a threat to everyone if they listen to a Fianna Fáiler's advice...

Guess some of the Lenihan family are now flying the Russian flag !

Yes but suppose they start selling surplus nukes to anyone who takes up a collection at a dinner party ?

Well Fianna Fáil are past masters at the art of collecting money at dinner parties (worked out well for Bertie), so they can redeem themselves in the eyes of the world by throwing a few Golf Classics and chucking what's left of the brown envelopes into a pot to buy up the surplus nukes.

    Win-win situation imo.

If he had taken a job in the Sceince and Technology area in Ireland he might rightly have come in for criticism, givin that he had just come from a position of formulating policy.
But he does the obvious thing; he gets to use his experience in the policy area without working in the jusistiction where HE formulated policy. I guess he just can't win.

So I assume your pholosophy is to take the money and run ?
As I asked before , what would mammy O Rourke say about this given that she levelled the charge of treason at Kenny for merely criticising the then Taoiseach whilst he was out of the country.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,930 ✭✭✭Jimoslimos

This sums up for me why I'm quite happy if Conor Lenihan DOESN'T let on he's from Ireland when discussing science with the Russians.

Take the money and run??? - he was sacked by his constituents - what do you expect him to do with his life?

As for Mary o'Rourke; I really don't know what she has to do with this at all. Perhaps a different thread (maybe in Politics Café or AH).

So Conor the Cretin is advising the Russians on technology, is this Ireland's revenge for them selling us those fcuking Ladas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,798 ✭✭✭goose2005

I wonder is he bringing his pal John J. May over to Russia to advise on matters of biology? Stick to the borscht, Conor.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,225 ✭✭✭Pete_Cavan

Great idea, send all ex-Fianna Fáil over to sabotage our rivals. All we have to do now is give Bertie to China and get Biffo in with India.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,672 ✭✭✭anymore

Someone reminded me that FF politicians have quite a track of being involved in business in Russia ? I had forgotten. I can think of two offhand. Maybe FF has its own little cumann in Moscow ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 732 ✭✭✭Xlami

Jesus the poor lad, he takes stick when he was working hard as minister, constantly being criticised for failing to stimulate the sector when he was in power. He was not re-elected so he took a step away from it. Now he's trying to work in Russia and he's taking stick. He can't win. Typical ignorant posters just wanting a rant.

That aint a rant - this is a rant:

Should have been ashamed to go forward to the electorate with that display under his belt, oligarchies suit his type alright.

God help the poor Russians. I have direct involvement in the "smart economy"; we had Lenihan down here to do a cutting the ribbon job and his speech consisted mostly of GAA anecdotes.

I actually applaud Kebabs for leaving

His party ruined Ireland , to leave is appropriate

If I had my way I would put about 20 of the FFers on a plane and throw them out one by one over siberia, with a parachute, a tent, warm clothes and enough food for a week.

    My list would include

    Bertie
    Callely
    Dick roche
    Cooper Flynn
    O dea
    M Martin
    Hanafin
    Biffo cowen
Biffo cowen (the other one )
    Dermot Ahern
    Dara Callearly
    Frank fahey
    John o Donoghue
    Batt o keeffe
    Noel Dempsey
    Michael mcgrath
    Mc creevy
    Mary o Rourke
    Mary Coughlan
    Harney

He may be gone, but the liability for providing his pension fund still stays with us - the money of course will have to be borrowed. It just occurs to me that if he moves his tax domicile abroad, depending on how long he stays out of the country, he may not even have to pay irish tax !
