    Hi All

I have a ford mondeo 2001 1.8 petrol mk2 which decided to shut down yesterday.
I was driving along and the power just stopped in the car(like runing out of petrol) the lights on the dash start flashing the door lock were on off on off clicking all the time.tried starting a couple of times then decided to get a tow.while being towed i tried starting again and nothing happened.on getting the car home checked the battery which was fine.so i was thinking the alternator or the starting motor but was abit put off when the car wouldnt start on the tow as i thought this could be done even if both parts above were broken???????please help im lost

Was it acting up before hand? Did the engine turn over when you tried to start it?

no the car was running fine untill yesterday when that happened to me! it wont even turn over now, when i try the clock needles go mad flying up and down and its making a clicking noise as if its the batt.. but ive checked that and there is power in it..

Try a new battery and reconnect the leads properly.

How did you check for power? If there is over 12 volts in it the battery is ok. Just because if the lights and radio are working dosen't mean the battery will have enough power to turn the engine over. Try get a jump start off someone. The alternator or battery could be fooked.

when i was getting towed would that not be the same as a jump i tried 3 times to start on the the tow nothing happened,if it was the alternator would the battery not have run totally flat when i was driving before it died on me,what im trying to say is if your alternator is not working would the car not drain every bit of power from the battery before it cuts out as wen i got home i tested the battery and there was power in it? sorry if it seems confusing

Important to check if the battery is charging. It could still be an alternator problem. If it is not charging then the same will happen again soon.

You need a multimeter. My money is on the alternator, I've seen a few fail on these.

Did you buy the battery or just get a lend of it? As far as I know the 2 litre diesel alternator is the same so it'll make your search a bit easier.

It is important to have the alternator checked before replacing it. It can get expensive fast if you throw parts at it. Get a mechanic or an auto electrician to check the charging.

It might worth to check on the ground lead as well, might be a loose/rusted connection (but not on the battery side).
