Depends on the car, but the short answer is that it'd be a lot cheaper to just change cars.

It depends on the car and the level of electronics involved. Older cars it is possible easily enough, the biggest problem being changing the fly wheel, and repositioning stuff.

On newer cars with lots of electronics I imagine most of the engine and gearbox electronics would have to be transplanted too.

It's a 00 Mitsubishi Mirage coupe my pal is looking to buy but wants to change it over to a manual in the near future.

On a modern car it could be a nightmare as most ecu programs would be different on an auto versus a manual.

I've done it on a few older Nissans and once you get all the required parts from the manual, gearbox, clutch/flywheel, pedal box, master cylinder, slave cylinder, pipes etc etc then its just the time involved in fitting everything.

Depending on the manufacturer you may also have to drill the bulkhead to fit the master cylinder and clutch pedal.

I'm looking at getting the same thing done on a 97 FTO GPVR. I have the donor car as well, so have found a few lads who specialise in FTOs on FTO-Ireland who are able to sort me out when I get around to it.

Prices vary madly, but I highly doubt you'll have any change out of 1k. My recommendation would be to find a suitable donor car, or find a gearbox/flywheel/clutch kit.

The good thing is that you can sell on your automatic gearbox as a conversion kit. I'd recommend finding an appropriate owners site for the Mirage (or Mitsubishi owners club). Even FTO-Ireland could be worth a shot, as quite a few people know their Mitsubishis on there.

Its funny, Conversions are big business over here. I would say 90% of cars here are Auto. Its generally older non mainstream cars tho.

Just convince her that there's nothing wrong with a automatics. Too much hassle and expense on such an old entry level car.
