I no this was probably done a million times. Im still only new to golf after takin it up in may this year. Im going to set myself a goal to score par by this time next year. That does not mean im going to become a scratch golfer just to have one single par round. Just wondering is this possible currently scoring in mid 90's and all advice welcome i will be posting regular updates of my progress.

A single par a round???? Too easy - I started to play regularly last year - today I had 5 pars. Mind you last year I tended to only get pars on the par 3's but by now I have parred every hole on my home course at some point.

Not at all easy nocal. Think about it. Every little thing has to go your way.

To get a single par in a round?????

OP, do you mean net par? If so you should be able to attain that alright, if you mean Gross par, thats a different story & yes you'll effectively be playing like a scratch golfer that day, it's doable of course but lots of work required.

Damn me and my rubbish reading skills - I thought he said - to have a single par per round - but no it is a single par round - ignore my posts - stupid mis-reading me again. Must pay more attention.:o:o:o:o:o:o:o

Edit: and damn you Keano - if you had not quoted me I could do some subtle editing so that my posts make sense. Ah well I was up before 7 this morning.

sorry for misunderstanding i ment if the net par is 72 at my home course then to finish with a 72 or under and ive worked out its going to take alot of work but its just one of them things ive set myself to do :P

This link has been posted on here before - http://forumserver.twoplustwo.com/93/golf/ultimate-practice-routine-992787/

You should take a read of it - very interesting stuff.

Edit: and apologies for ruining the beginning of your thread.

Unless you are very talented and can dedicate a lot of time to practice (and probably spend a lot on lessons) then I'd say the chances are 500-1 or so (probably more). Sorry but I don't think you'll do it; I'd love to be wrong so good luck and keep practicing.

Started playing in May and want a level par 72 by September 2012, can't see that happening.

Plenty of practise and custom fitting will help alot but then you have no mental baggage so keep your head empty of bad rounds.

Anything is possible if you put your mind to it! No one ever achieved nothing without first dreaming about it and then setting a goal.

Just hope you have no school/college or are a top executive in a thriving company because it will take some amount of your time

    Mike,
Best of luck with your ambitious goal. It can be done, but it will require a phenomenal work ethic - a guy from Northern Ireland called John Richardson set himself the same goal a few years back and wrote a book about it (Dream On). It details the hours and hours of hitting balls, the golf lessons and reading/watching instruction books & videos. It also shows how his day job suffered.

It's now being made into a movie... so it's no small feat. I hope that if you go for it you keep a blog so we can all see how you're getting on.

    Hi,
Think it depends if you are young injury free and have loads of free time you can do it easy. If i were you i would Break down the time i have to work on my game by 25% playing 25% Long game and 50% short game and i would expect to spend 10/12 hours practicing alone.
    Mike

I'd think that any adult who has the natural athleticism, coordination, concentration and application to go to from novice to scratch in a year, should be a tour player within 3 years.

Good luck with it, but I don't think you've a chance in hell.

As Kevin says above John Richardson's has done this. Read the book Dream On to give you an insight into the massive commitment you will need to dedicate yourself to. I can still here Seve and Hogan talking to Richardson in his book, great read.

Lest we forget that if you have a shot on a hole then a bogey is still a par ;)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 417 ✭✭Freemount09

You took up the game in May this year and are shooting mid 90's ! Thats shows you obviously have some natural ability and talent.

I think if your a member somewhere and play the same course regularly after a bit you should have pared every hole on the course then its all about getting the confidence to do all 18 together in one round.

But you'll need everything to go your way on the day !

I'd say you can do it ! Go for it ! Good luck !

It doesnt really work like that does it! I have birdied most of the holes on my home course but I wouldn't think I could go round in about 14 under.
If the OP has a huge amount of free time then it should be an enjoyable challenge. Though I would think getting to single figures would be a better more doable challenge

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,645 ✭✭✭k.p.h

I think you could do it mike, break par that is. But in 12 months .. I'm not so sure. The amount of time and resources you would need would be epic so it would be very difficult.

I agree with webbs that getting the handicap into single digits would be a bit more achievable in that time frame.

But whats the worst that could happen .. You get better at golf, ;) You obviously really love playing golf so their is definitely no harm in trying..

This guy started out about 10 months ago with the aim of becoming a scratch golfer.... he has even got sponsorship from Wilson and a fair bit of coaching.... After 10 months he has just shot 80..

Depending on the time you have to practice I think it's possible but it'll take a lot of dedication.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 600 ✭✭✭The Orb

I think it's possible if you virtually do nothing but play golf for the next year. It also depends on what type of course you intend to do it on, it's clearly easier to score well on some of the easier courses. My question is why do you want to do it? Why can't you just enjoy the game for the sake of it and just try to get your handicap down. I read John Richardson's book and by the end of it I thought he was just a selfish obsessive fanatic who put golf before everything, I thought he was a right eejit. Just enjoy the game and don't obsess over it.

Got my first set of clubs in may, first few attempts was between 105 to 110, last month has been 95-99, last 2 weeks ive gotten high 80s :):)

Gonna try keep it up and get hcap down to single digits by next summer, i think anyone with a bit of talent and dedication will be able to get down to low 90s high 80s, breaknig 80 consistently will require serious game improvement i reckon? Time will tell!! :D

By the way, has anybody here started out playing golf and reached single digit hcap within a year??

Thanks for all the positive feedback. Should have explained my situation Im 21 very athletic through other sports the only downside is that i work nine to five weekdays but my local course is like a two minute drive away its gowran park in kilkenny very nice course ive played a few and its by far the nicest and for those asking why i want to do it i just like setting myself targets. As for the smaller targets yes i have them set out but my year one the main idea for all my small targets is this goal. I intend on doing some kind of golf at least six days of the week

Best of luck. Good to have goals and the higher the better. Careful not to get frustrated which is a possibility when trying to get somewhere fast.

Golf is a fickle mistress and can play you as much as you play it. The problem I think is that being new to the game means that the swing is not really engrained and can therefore slip away from you more easily or morph from beautiful to wretched from one week to the next.

Wish you all the best mike it's gonna be tough though. I myself have been slowly getting better but more from experience than hard work, practice and playing and if I was to give you 1 tip that every pro and teacher would confirm is that you practice properly and probably with correct supervision as you do not want to practice your faults and errors at any stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,613 ✭✭✭newport2

    Best of luck Mike!!

You should make a load of bets at your club that you won't do it, that way you'll either shoot level par or pocket a lot of money. Can't lose :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,361 ✭✭✭jaggiebunnet

Good luck man ! I too have recently taken it up - my aim for next year is to shoot sub 100 and the occasional par - mind you I will be lucky if I can get out once a month! :)

I'll play a singles comp with you some weekend and you might learn a few new bad habits ;)
Certainly you should try and play a few rounds with low guys and see how they put a round together...

Well that's a great start as you'll come on leaps and bounds. Make sure you get some direction though and spend a lot of the time by yourself practicing. When I had time I spent about 75% of my time practicing and 50% of this was on putting and chipping.

    Day 1
Just played nine holes in gowran park today heres how i feel after today
Driving 4/10 going far just a small slice leaves a hard second shot
    Long irons 5/10
Short irons 6/10 getting the right distance just feel as if im pushing it a bit
    wedge play 6/10
    bunker play 4/10
putting 7/10 i have always been okay at this part as my stroke just feels right

Still a whole lot of room for improvement tommorow im going to work on putting at the putting green there i have a few drills from the internet but if anyone has any other ones feel free to share them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,690 ✭✭✭Whyner

I've noticed that average players think putting is their best part while lower handicappers think putting is their weakest part.

I believe better players are more honest and have a better understanding

No one over loses a ball putting or puts one out of bounds or into a hazard....so they tend to think they decent at putting, big mistake....just saying...

Keep stats, not ratings out of ten, will help you identify weaknesses/strengths easier.

    Best of luck.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 84 ✭✭mikemanley

had the stats just saved in my iphone wasnt in the mood to re-type them onto this. and i say my putting is okay not great because i used to play pitch and putt a good bit so i have a decent stroke i very rarely 3 putt and have to seldom 2 putting

Gotcha, sure post them up when you get a chance

Very rarely 3 putt and currently scoring in mid 90's? I'm off 13 and would have 2-4 a round. At least one part of your game is in good nick

    Gowran park nine holes-Day 1
    hole 1-par5-i got a seven hit the fairway and 2 putted-index 18
    hole 2-par4-i got a 5 1 putted-index 8
    hole 3-par 4 another 5 2 putted--index 6
hole 4-par 4 hit the fairway but two putted to a six-index 2
    hole 5-par 3 birdied this hole with a one putt-index 15
hole 6-par 4 first par of the day with another one put-index 12
hole 7-par 4 hit a six here was hitting my second from the trees 2 putted-index 4
    hole 8-par 5 another par and another 1 putt-index 14
hole 9-par 3 hit a six here with a ball in the water off the tee-index 10

so came in with 46 strokes. par was 36 so a ten over on the front nine
    also hit 14 putts

Good shootin dude, deffo can get down to low 40s. That first hole par 5 is very straight forward, ul be parring that all day long soon. One thing i found about gowran when i played a few weeks ago is that its hard enough to lose a ball :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 84 ✭✭mikemanley

ive pared it before and yeah very easy to lose one if your ever in the area again give us a shout if your looking for someone to play with im always game

If you're hitting GIR, you will need to take no more than 30 putts in a round to break par imo .. likewise short game should have you up and downing 7/10 around the green ... shortgame is the secret to your goal ...best of luck

While i agree with that statement id have to add that to go around in par you need to be hot stuff in all areas. You need to be able to drive the ball straight/straightish, have a nice long iron game and also be good at pitching and putting.

No point being good at putting if your driving them wayward left and right, same goes for no point driving 350 yards dead straight then having a dirt short game, you need to be on the ball at all the aspects and i believe a good 1st shot is very important for confidence and rhythm/momentum etc
