Fitness and diet/ing for the middle aged

I pop in to this forum every now and again just to see what's new.
It seems to cater mostly for men and some women between the ages of 18 and 35ish.
How relevant are the fitness logs here to middle aged men and women, apart from getting motivation from reading them? How different is the fitness regime for the older person?
I notice in the gym that there are a lot more women than men in their 50s and 60s using the weight machines and cardio machines and they seem to be just to keep the body toned rather than anything radical.
I have the similar queries for the nutrition forum. Is it fact that metabolism slows down as you get older? If it does slow, should the BMI and calorie intake charts be calibrated differently or do the same rules apply to a 20 year old as to a 60 year old?
It is fashionable to say you are as young as you feel, but if your body is as old as it is, feeling young can only take you so far.
Skipping down that road myself I am wondering how to keep the body in reasonable shape for when I hit 90.
Can anyone also recommend further reading on this, ignoring the articles about one in a million 90 y.o. male who still has his 6 pack. :D
    Thank you in advance
