Which is cheaper? Oil or Gas

Going to get gas installed into the house, just trying to work out which is cheaper, kerosene or Gas?

A fill based on cheapest oil at the moment is around 800 for 1,000 lts. Just looking at ESB and Airtricity for Gas pricing, its 5.13cent per KWH.

is there any way to work out which is cheaper? or do you know which is cheapest?

In terms of gas supply companies I guess ESB are doing the best price?

the general conversion factor is that a litre of oil gives you 11.8 kWh... so working it out, your gas kWh cost is cheaper comparing apples with apples.

however, what is your oil delivery cost versus the standing charge etc. for gas?

In work, a mech engineer worked out that a school would be better off with oil...

check bonkers.ie for provider comparisons. And what is your house like energy wise - do you have an idea of your kWh heat consumption presently? Do you have a BER?

HI, I changed from oil to a gas fired boiler several years ago and I have found the gas to be much cheaper to run, I live in a 3 bed detached bungalow and my bill for heating and hot water for all of last year was 667 euro.

depends, are you talking mains gas or LPG.

    Lets talk cost per kWhr

1 kWhr of mains gas is 6c ish
1 kWhr of oil is about 7.c
LPG is a good bit more.

Its Dublin so gas straight from the line.

I think gas works out a bit cheaper, apart from that you don't have to worry about calling the oil lorry before the weekend or about somebody draining your oil tank in the middle of the night. Gas was a fair bit cheaper than oil when it was peaking a few weeks ago, but sadly Gas prices are locked to oil prices so the prices are going up.

    Hi,

I'm also interested in this. However, our build is up the country so we dont have piped gas so I guess it would be LPG that we would have to get in. I've been told you have to pay a yearly rental for the gas tank, apparently you can't buy this outright in Ireland so Im wondering would this leave your annual heating costs higher then if we went for oil?

If anyone has any more info on this I'd appreciate it.

    Thanks

My brother and I ran a comparison between our 4 bed detached houses.

We have very similar setup except
I've mains gas and he has oil.

I pay average 100 a month, (less in summer and more in winter).
Last year he bought 1350 of oil.(Allowing a bit left over as he doesn't let the tank run dry)

So the difference is very little in the end.

    Hi GUys

have pulled out the oil anyway, boiler was old so threw out, only thing that annoyed me was I thought the tank was nearly empty, have taken out 100 ltrs already and prob another 100 ltr in it but giving it to family for free. Could have used more last year but didnt want to refill as I knew I would probably take out.

Going with Gas and date for 20 September for installation, just looking to work out if ESB or who is cheapest for combined?
