Kitchen Sink Tap Aerator

Tap in kitchen gushes water where you always get soaked when anywhere near it. The faucet does not have the internal threads where an aerator could screw in and slow the water down and make the flow more subtle.

Is there such a thing as a universal fitting aerator that would attach to any tap? Googled and not finding anything. Local hw shop had no ideas.

Anyone any ideas other than replacing the tap?

Hi, dunno if you are following this thread but hopefully you are...

I have been looking for the same thing. I'm sick of running the tap and the water splattering out of it all over the place.

The only place I have found that seems to do a fitting for non-threaded taps is TapMagic, which is a UK based website. Here's a link to two possible solutions:

    http://www.tapmagic.co.uk/Shop/Tapmagic/TMMULTIFIT_Tapmagic_Multifit.html

    http://www.tapmagic.co.uk/Shop/Tapmagic/TMDUALNT_Tapmagic_Unifit_(Round_Threadless_Taps).html

They are no mad expensive either waym and I'm sure the shipping would not be a lot, but I'd prefer to buy Irish if I can. I have sent a query to one of the Irish websites that sells threaded fittings, to see if they have any that will fit non-threaded fittings. If I hear anything back I'll let you know. Otherwise it might be TapMagic that will provide the solution.

I'm so annoyed, I have been thinking about getting something like this for over a year, and I recently replaced my taps as part of an overall kitchen makeover, but of course I totally forgot about making sure that the taps flowed properly! The old tap had threads, and the new one doesn't, totally bugged that I didn't pay better attention!

Anyway, let me know how you get on...

Generally you do not put aerators on kitchen sink taps. Thats why they are not on it. So sorry i cant help you.

A lot of kitchen fittings have them as standard these days though (obviously not the one I bought, but that's another matter ).

It makes sense to me anyway, given the water-use savings that can be made by using them, not to mention a tap that doesn't splatter water all over the place when you turn it on! That reason alone is good enough for me to get one, the water-use saving is a bonus!

Is there a particular reason why they are not generally put on kitchen taps Joey?

I think you are confusing aeriators with diffusers. Most kitchen taps come with diffuser holes. These are black cartridges in the spout with about 9 holes in it. The purpose of these is to blend the water.

An aeriator is a mesh. If the mesh was on a kitchn tap then lime flies and dirt in general would clog up the taps.

Aah I see, I wasn't aware there was two different things, well, I have seen the black diffusers, but I always just considered them part of the tap as opposed to a separate thing called a diffuser.

Having seen both in use in a number of different places, I still think that the water projection created by an aerator is far superior to the black diffusers. There was a diffuser on my previous tap set and it was in no way comparable to (for example) the taps in work which have the mesh aerators on them. you can run the taps at full whack and place your hand flat underneath and the water just runs off without a splash. At home with the old diffuser if I did that there would be water splashing everywhere.

Thanks for the clarification though! I will bear that in mind when purchasing.

Old thread and all, but hopefully somebody might be able to help. Ideally want a swivel head attachment for a non-threaded kitchen tap. Trying to reach the far corners of the sink easier. There’s a lot of splashing too so an aerator would be great. That tapmagic site linked to above seems to have stopped doing business.

Have you tried Neoperl. They do a lot of accessories for taps like aerators etc. They will point you in the direction of an Irish distributor if they have it.

Just had a look, all seem to be threaded unfortunately. Thanks anyway.

From my experience it's really tricky to find a fitting that is really secure on a non-threaded tap, and that's just for a static fitting that doesn't move. The slightest bump used to knock them off straight away. That combined with the water pressure - it just never worked. Ended up replacing the tap unit with a threaded fitting. Might be worth considering if you have no luck. Taps are fairly reasonable these days.

    How old is the tap?
The vast majority of taps usually have threads either inside or outside for attaching aerators, diffusers etc.

Surprisingly, they're still being sold without them. We got a kitchen fitted 3 years ago and Mrs Sleepy even specc'd a "higher end" sink and tap than the one in the original design. The tap is bloody useless due to not having an aerator attached (it splashes all over the place) and isn't threaded for adding one. I'm still fuming I didn't catch it at the time because I genuinely believe they "upsold" her their cheapest piece of crap based on aesthetics while I wasn't there.

Only option I can see is to replace the tap unit which I'll be doing as soon as I can find one with the right look for a reasonable price.

Replacing the tap is probably the right decision in the long run, even though your current tap might suit the aesthetic. You'll value the performance of a new tap no end once you get one with an aerator! :D

Depending on the manufacturer/brand, you might be able to source and change the spout to one that has an aerator thus saving on replacing the whole tap and the plumbing in/out.
