You can only use a UPC provisioned modem, thatg means you can't just replace one of your own like with a DSL provider, if you have the Cisco EPC2203 modem with netgear router attached, you can purchase any router to use in conjunction with it, any wireless router should work without difficulty, modem routers on the other hand you can't use, as UPC won't provision them

Sorry I don't totally understand. When I ordered UPC she asked me did I want to purchase a wifi modem I said no because we had some old ones at home and they might work she explained that I needed one with a cable connection now found out its a coaxial cable but our modem doesnt have this. I asked her if the modem I had didnt have this connection could I just purchase one from eg PC world and she said yes would work fine???

As pointed out above, you need a router which you attach to the modem via a lan cable. That's the sort of cable you attach to the computer.

I haven't ever used cable broadband before so I can't be sure of this, but it seems to me when you purchased the broadband UPC gave you a box that is connected to a tv point in your home via a coaxial cable.

For you to get a wifi connection to the internet in your home you need to purchase a wireless router(which is what they offered to you at time of purchase). You can buy pretty much any router you like off the internet or in PC World and just connect the router to your UPC box via an enternet cable.`
Something like this would do you fine.

For clarity the wireless router won't have a Coaxial connection or a regular phone connection on the back. All it will have is an Ethernet in and a number of Ethernet out connectors.

Wifi modem in that context is a combined cable modem and wireless router.
If UPC have given you a cable modem without wireless functionality, you can hook up your own wireless router to it. The easiest type to add are traditional wireless routers (with an ethernet port for the internet connection) but you can usually adapt a DSL modem/wireless router combo for this purpose (you'll first need to log in to it and disable its DHCP server function).
she explained that I needed one with a cable connection now found out its a coaxial cable but our modem doesnt have this.
The cable connection she's talking about here is an ethernet cable from the cable modem, not a coaxial cable connection.
What do you have at home that you're hoping to use? A Netopia 2247?

What you need is a wireless router, but you must use UPCs cable modem (the EPC2203 only)
