I'm moving into Galway city soon and can't afford a gym membership, but I really enjoy running...I was wondering if there are any common places just to go for a jog, maybe a mile or two long (I'm not that fit...) in the city?
Somewhere quiet-ish would be nice, but anywhere really, a stretch of road or track? Cheers.

The prom is a good place or the causeway out to mutton island.I usually just run in the gym.Wish I could go for runs outside more.

Out by the river in Dangan there's a trail for running/walking on, great spot to go

Is the Ballybrit racecourse open for runners by any chance? I know here in Sligo they keep it open and maintained for joggers and walkers.

The most common area is around the South Park,Causeway,Prom area. From South Park to the caravan park at back of the Golf Course past Blackrock diving tower is 3.5km.Or a run up and back of the causeway to the first gate is 1.2km in total. Not many other area's that are long and flat apart from the already mentioned path along by the river.

the race course is a great place to go running. its open all the time, its quiet and there is a good path running on the outside of the track. a lap is about a mile and a quarter i think.

The prom is way too crowded at times for running.

if your living the east side of the city near renmore, the pitches opposite the kingfisher are good or over at mervue utd, with trails marked out.

I like to start from South Park, up around Nimmo's Pier, out to the roundabout on the Salthill prom and back. It's almost exactly 5k.

I used to go to the racecourse and yes, it's a mile and a quarter around. Steepish hill in one corner

    It's great

Hi. Is it ok to run the the race course trac?. I am staying in the clayton for work in the coming weeks and this would be ideal for run out.

Yep its ok for most of the track but they prefer if people stay off the section directly in front of the stands. So there is usually a detour signposted that takes you off the track for that section.

    Thanks for that.

Where do you enter the race track. Is it the entrance off the dual carriageway?

Ok there are a few different places. I suspect pulling up on the dual carriageway is not ideal. So if arriving by car I would go in via Parkmore there is a back road in via Chadwicks? Builders supplies. (I might have that name wrong). Alternatively go in via the business park at Ballybrit - home of Boston Scientific, Hewlett Packard and most importantly Supermacs HQ (why else would we need to go running?). You can park.down past APC on what becomes the slip road onto the dual carriageway and access the racecourse via a couple of fairly obvious gates.

Another good spot for a quiet jog is Woodstock which is off the Moycullen road. Its a Coilte plantation with a circa 1.5k? loop. Go out the Moycullen N59 Rd and take the second left after Kelehans/Glenloe Abbey. Its up about 400m on the right. This is rough and ready track territory with a few inclines.
