First thing I'd do is try a different Mkv file

If the player just won't play .mkv files you could first try return it as it's faulty or convert the .mkv files to another format. This will cause the files to(depending on how they were encoded) dramatically increase in size.

I really hate products that say they can play MKVs. MKV is not a video format, it's a container. Think of it like a zip file that contains an audio file and a video file (and a subtitle file) inside. Sure, you need to be able to know how to open the zip, but you also need to know how to decode the video track inside. My guess is that it can't do that. Most MKVs these days have their video track in h.264, the player mentions none of that. My bet is that it can handle DivX video inside an MKV container, and that's it.

Actually if I remember correctly, FAT won't play a file above 2gb which a Mkv most probably would be. My brother has the same issue with a wd player, as do my inlaws (same player) I wasn't sure if it was a restriction of the player or the hard drive & I seem to remember discovering it was something to do with FAT16 which the hard drive was & the player couldn't see any other format.

Bit of a weird file, generally I avoid anything encoded or muxed by any DivX tools because they are lousy.

The first thing I would do is remux with MKVMergeGUI. (Download the MKVToolnix package). Will only take a few seconds, drag the whole thing into the input window and click 'Start Muxing'

Also MP3 in MKV isn't commonly used, its perfectly compliant and the BD550 should support it, but you might find that they've never tested that combination simply because it is rarely used.

Is your firmware up to date?
