Hi, I want to take up golf. I have been to the driving range a few times and I'm really keen to start correctly. I was wondering where would be best to buy a set of clubs and what brand of clubs would be best. Also, how much should I expect to pay? I don't want to buy the cheapest as I will be using them for a while!! Also are there different lengths of clubs that I should be looking at? I'm female if that matters!!

I'd talk to some of your female friends that have played for a while. You should get ladies clubs rather than handed down men's ones. It also depends a bit on your height and your swing speed............if you are small then you may need shorter clubs and maybe non-standard lie. Lighter clubs with flexible shafts would probably be suitable.

Some women tend to like using woods instead of long or mid irons as they find them easier to use.

I'd go to several shops and golf club professionals and ask for their advice. After a couple of visits I'd hope that you find some good advice.

Go to someone at a driving range and try out a few different brands.
Don't buy straight off the shelf. You have to consider shaft length, flex and the lie of the club head. If any of these don't suit you you've wasted your money.

I have been to Derek at the Golf Studio in celbridge recently and would recommend him

delighted you put this post up

I've just started golf lessons.... I booked in for 5 sessions, to get me going. I didn't want to pick up habits...

I've only had 2 lessons.... but I'm out every day practicing for about 20 mins at least.

I'm going to wait until nearer the end to speak to him about what I should invest in. I'm 5ft4 and female so will let you know in a few weeks...

    good luck and enjoy...

I've no one to ask as I know noone who plays!!!!

I have pretty much the same problem, none of my friends play and they aren't interested in playing so I have to go solo..

Cheers guys for the response, I will try what you both said to try and get the best suited clubs.

I would recommend taking a few lessons if you want to start correctly and then ask your pro for advice. You will not go far wrong with any of the major brands and they all make sets of clubs for ladies. You will be able to check prices on various websites (e.g. McGuirks, Halpenny golf) and get a sense of the range of ladies clubs that they have.
If you are of average height then there is no need to worry about length of club etc. If you are taller than average it may be an issue.
The main point of consideration would be to get a set of clubs with a shaft that is suitable for your swing and more specifically your swing speed.
It can also be well worth looking at second hand clubs as you can often get great value in a set of clubs that are a year or two old and as you improve you can then invest in newer clubs. (Hope this helps).
