Technology company Apple is now worth as much as the 32 biggest euro zone banks.

That's the stark result from a steep fall in the share price of banks including Spain's Santander, France's BNP Paribas, Germany's Deutsche Bank and Italy's Unicredit, compared to a steady rise in Apple's valuation, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Earlier on Friday the DJ STOXX euro zone banks index fell 4 percent, valuing its 32 members at $340 billion. That's based on the market capitalization of their free-float shares, which for some French banks in particular is less than 100 percent.

The index has crashed by a third since the start of July, hammered by fears banks will lose billions from their holdings of euro zone government bonds and a failure of policymakers to stop a euro zone debt crisis from spreading.

The euro zone banks have lost three-quarters of their value since peaking in May 2007.

In contrast, Apple's market capitalization has soared to $340 billion on the back of the success of innovative technology products like iPods, iPhones and iPads.

At the moment according to that measure, at any rate. At least it's a sign of sanity when a company which is manufacturing something is worth more than companies like banks which create nothing tangible.

Google buying Motorola may well be the beginning of the end. All they need to do is knock together a technologically gimped handset with an app store that's 99.9% utter garbage and they'll kill the iPhone with the right marketing campaign.

That and Amazon with their later tablets (some of which soon to be released) - who also have marketing and sales abilities established the world over.

Lets be honest, for what Apple make, they do well - there can't be much argument about that (maybe there can?) - but its getting somewhat bland to see someone now with an Apple product in their hands.
Honestly, I'm tired of hearing about Apple, as much as I try to avoid all their advertising, the news reports etc, its become boringly repetitive and for a lot of folk interest saturation point has been reached. Now it's just growing tiresome and sadly unavoidable is a lot of cases.
There are other products out there - or soon will be (additionally if Apple stop trying to stomp out competition by starting up action blocking court cases).

I had an iPhone 3G and got rid of it because of the ****ty battery life. Once you get over the touchscreen and massively disappointingly App Store all it is is an expensive phone with terrible battery life.

100% true that, any fool can use an iPhone and Apples locked down policy means your very limited in what you can do, basically you do what Apple tells you, no thanks Android all the way for me.

Having said that you have to give them their due, they have aggressively marketed iPhones/iPads,etc and the general public like sheep have snapped them up in their droves,it's gotten to the stage now they don't even need to advertise that much as the fanboys will buy anything Apple related.

its not suprising they really have got there grips in some nech markets.

Tho having said that steve jobs is the only reason the companies doing so well. and the other major factor being that as a company there peeking in terms of popularity and technolgiy weres next you gotta wonder, its been two years since they really brough anything ground braking out. now if they can bring out something that hasnt been done. well then all well and good.

There are plenty of people who like there OS apoosed windows and lynix but thats personal preference, its really were apple goes next interms of product and branding that will set them off.

Not really. Apple are now, I think, the second largest publicly listed company in the world, coming second only to an oil company. They're bigger than Microsoft and Intel were at their height; combined.

It does have something in common with the banks though in that people's understanding of them is equally well informed.

I'm not paying huge money for my phone, in fact, I got it for free. My iPhone is costing me less than my previous Nokia.

Hate the bloody things! Would always go for a good PC over a Mac but to me, the iPhone is second to none at the moment. Ok the battery life is a bit pants but in fairness I've probably been watching TV, using FB, browsing Boards, listening to music and tracking my runs/cycles.

indeed, the HTC design and build quality , coupled with that half baked OS known as android are not doing anyone any favours , the only reason those handsets sell is their price point
