Once long ago, when eMachines were bought by Gateway, eMachines were cheap, but usually piles of crap, with a lot of stuff going wrong with them. They continued to be cheap crap whilst Gateway owned them, and when Acer then bought Gateway a few years back, they also got eMachines as well.

Recently, I'm seeing eMachines been sold again, and I'm wondering are they still sh|te, or are eMachines now any better?

I would consider Acer sh!ite so yep :P Acer laptops always seemed a bit flimsy maybe thats just me, know of many people with Acers having issues with various components, touchpad, hinges etc although this could be down to user fault, unless the machine is a steal imo I would avoid eMachines, although I cannot say for certain if they have improved or not since

i have one for the last 4 months, use it mostly for surfing the web, streaming movies and tv shows, watching dvds, typing the occasional bits on Word. have had no problems with it as of yet, would recomend one for recreational use as they are cheap, got this as my old one is just about dead. my old laptop was a dell latitude, have it for about 5 years, i thought dell were great as they replaced my motherbored and gave me a bigger hard drive about 18 months ago as it was under warrenty. but even after they did this i was getting trouble with it.

As of a year ago anyways, YES

My neighbour has one, and while it works, so, technically, does the old P4 box inside.

If you're going to be spending ~€300 you may as well bump on €80 and get onto the bottom rung of proper laptops.
