you're not actually hitting a five iron, I know it says '5' on the sole, but its actually a four iron!

    check the lofts

If it says 5 on the bottom, and he has his distances with them, then whats the difference? If he pulls out his "5" as you call it, and his friend uses his 4 and they both get the same distance who cares? Plenty of diff companies im sure have slightly stronger/weaker lofts, not every 4 or 5 iron is gonna be the same

The new TaylorMade TP MB irons look gorgeous although on the pricey end
    http://golfstoreeurope.com/Kits.aspx?ModelID=2288
also the TaylorMade TP CB irons
    http://golfstoreeurope.com/Kits.aspx?ModelID=2289
Good sign also when you can get a matching 2 iron.

The loft is strong and the shaft length is sometimes longer too.
If you take the MP-53 that people are recommending as an example:

7 iron of Burner 2.0 is 31 degrees with 37" length as against the MP-53 of 34 degrees and 36.75" length.
    The Titleist AP2 7 iron is 35 degrees with a 37" length.

35 degrees is about "standard" for a 7 iron (mine is set to 36 degrees).

Of course the burner 2.0 is going to be 'long' and no wonder 'they' sell 5-PW sets :)

Spot on. It's a "marketing trick" which in my opinion Callaway started a long time ago with Big Bertha irons. I used to play with an old set of blades and try as I might I was always taking one and sometimes two clubs more. However I could hit my 2 iron quite well and noticed that the other guys avoided even their 3 iron. TO confuse me further I was one of the longest with my driver. It took me a while to realise that my lofts were weaker and the length of my clubs were shorter. In effect my 8 iron was quite close to their wedge.......hence the modern need for the extra wedges.

All that has happened is that the 3 and 4 iron have been dropped and now we have to buy extra wedges.

Yes there are times when a particular set works better for one person (mainly due to the shaft flex) but to say that one set is 10 or 20 yards longer than another is just falling into the "bear pit".

Looking to change from my MX-23's to these.(JPX 800's)
Playing off 18 so a bit concerned they may not suit.
Hit a few shots with an 8 iron in AG and loved the look and feel of them, as well as gaining 1-1.5 clubs in length.

Selling for 389 are they worth it? (play probably on average more than once a week).

Theres a good few for sale second hand on adverts for less than that I think, seem to come up often enough.

The free fitting in mcguirks and halpenny might be worth it if your really unsure what you want, give you the option to hit a few more irons side by side.

I play of 19 and have the JPX 825 irons. Had them fitted and they are amazing.
The 800's are a bargain at that price. Get fitted though.

    HI OP
Bought the Mizuno's JPX 825 pro's amazing clubs

    http://www.golfstoreeurope.com/en/Mizuno-JPX-825-Pro-Irons---Custom-Fit/k-4871.aspx

Got them in American Golf in Wilton,
Guy had one of these http://golf.mizunoeurope.com/custom/swing-dna.php and I just hit shots for 10 minutes.
They will match any online price they said. Also completed the set with the MP-T4 wedges.

I can honestly say they are well worth considering

What did you pay for fitting or what "should" it cost if I may be so bold!!

Exactly where I was looking at them. Going off to google other sites for prices thanks for the tip.

Edit to say they are cheaper elsewhere, but can only see the price match offer on their UK site. Does this stand for their irish counterparts?

    Hi Slicemeister,
As far as I know American golf in Wilton is actually owned by American Golf and not a franchise, so deals to be done
I actually found them good to deal with, and they matched a price I found online no probs.
Clubs took about 10 days to arrive but were perfect. Best of luck in your search, but I would seriously recommend those JPX 825 pro's. PM if you have any other questions by all means.

Just a small spanner for you, the 800's are not a forged club, and use a plastic/rubber insert to make up.

they just dont have the same feeling as the older mx23's, there really is a world of difference.

    Definitely go pro!

Not sure I understand the comment about the plastic / rubber for non forged club.
The 800, 825's and EZ all have rubber & plastic in both the cast and the forged versions of the clubs.

    I use the burner 2.0 4 -pw
I agree the lofts are lower that's what taylormade do but I love the clubs,
If the 4 iron is the same as other 3 irons then I hit a 3 iron well who cares,as long as you know your distance for each club

I wouldn't dream of spending anything like the budget the OP has without going for a proper fitting where there are a few options to choose from. You're potentially wasting your money, or not getting anywhere near proper value for the money you spend if you dont

yea agree I was looking at r11 irons they were over 600 euro, Checked you tube Mark Crossfield and he compared them to 2.0 irons and said no difference, I picked the 2.0 up for 300 in American golf on sale great choice

Turns out they're not the club for me at all. Hitting them with a cut, ended up trying out the Callaway X-Hot, TaylorMade LongesteversooperderdoopidyR43sc and some other club(genuinely can't remember).

Really liked them so a tad disappointed. Bought the X hots.
