    Game Stop

    I'm not sure if you meant that as a Pun but it gave me a giggle in a moment of despair! :D

Physical media will become an afterthought, something obtainable only online either from a store or direct from X.

    You can almost bet your boots that the little amount of physical media that does go on sale, is going to double in price due to smaller quantity also.

    In fact the moment one of these copies go on sale,
    it will instantly become a collectors item from the moment it's sold!

    The time period for a game to become highly valuable among collectors will be a lot less.

    Maybe 3D Printers will be a new way of getting your hands on the "physical copy".

    Seems the Silent Hill HD collection is an absolute disgrace with even the original Silent Hill 2 art director being disgusted with it:

    I think one of the things that hashappened to the games industry in general is that the market has segregated massively. This generation has seen games move to being either massive sellers from a franchise like MW3 or Gears 3 which take in billions or they are much more niche like journey, or Shadow Complex whi h sell much smaller numbers and so need to be able to avail of the lower costs of digital distribution to be profitable.

    This means that the stores are pinched, stocking titles that aren't massive AAA sellers simply doesn't make business sense anymore because those titles don't sell. I'm talking about worthwhile games like darksiders, epic mickey and even stuff like Portal 2. While Portal 2 was a good seller games like that are much less likely to be made in the future becuase they don't represent a good risk for the publishers who finance the games.

    This is why game or anyother store closing is bad news for those of us enjoy games other than MW3, less places to sell the likes of Portal 2 means less portal 2s will appear.

    The whole Game situation is a bit sad for me , I remember when they (Irish branches anyway) were Virgin games.(remember playing X wing on a demo PC in the dawson st branch),Then Electronic Boutique(which I still have a loyalty card for somewhere, then Game.

    I think all Irish stores are closed for the moment. Just had a quick look a minute ago on my lunch and the one in dundrum is closed anyway and staff seem to be sorting through games. Pretty sad tbh. I always liked shopping in game. Had seen a few things I was going to pick up after Friday but won't be able to now unless the re open to sell off stock. hopefully some of the stores will re open as tbh I much prefer going into a shop and looking through games as opposed to looking at pictures of them online then waiting for them to arrive.

    Game died when Game Grafton Street died. What a store that was. New games downstairs, older ones up with the Magic the Gathering and Pokemon stuff.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,083 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

    I remember they had a lowest price gaurantee when they opened and they usually kept to that promise and if they didn't they'd refund the difference. Now they are by far and away the most expensive. Really miss that Grafton street store as well. I remember drooling over the 32X games there and remember seeing and holding a copy of Darxide in the upstairs section. If only I could see the future!

    Really like the staff in the Limerick store as well and now we have some muppet abusing them on the games forum because he got burned and it was all their fault since they should have known it was closing. Myself and Sera asked them on saturday if they were closing and they genuinely didn't have a clue and said they learn about it from the internet before they are told.

    Honestly heartbroken about them losing their jobs. It's gonna be awful for Cruises St as well to have another shop gone, United Colours just closed their shop the other day too.

    Looks like some of the GAME staff are organising a sit-in protest in the stores.

    Edit:-
    Few unhappy pics here:

    What's the story if you just spent money on a new console there?
    Not me, no fundage, but how will your warranty be honoured?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,328 ✭✭✭Pyongyang

    Very sad news. Those poor folk at GAME Newry are out of work now it seems. :(

    @StefanEmmanuelleUlyssesSI:

    I'll be heading to the Loop tomorrow for a bit of tax free shopping. How much is a PS Vita in Dixons?

    Don't suppose you saw any Nikon lenses on sale too per chance?

    Also, any iPad 3 stuff? I'm after a cover for mine.

    Wouldn't you be covered by a manufacturers warranty though?

    I'd say you're out of luck with the Nikon lenses but you might grab some iPad stuff or a vita. Not sure on prices.
    I'm a Nikon man myself, what ya got?

    I don't really use the Loop to be honest as prices are nearly always better on the other side of the trip for what I'd be interested in(it's all just cosmetics and stuff isnt it?).

    I used to have a D70. Got rid of that and now sport a D3100. Had it a while but doubt I'd change it as the kit is ideal for me. Keen on a few new lenses though.

    I bought my D3100 in Dublin airport oddly enough. Was off to work in Dubai last year and it was cheaper here than there so I snagged it on the way out. Price was even better than in Dubai Mall or Emirates Mall and even DBX.

    Jersey airport duty free is a bit plop. Cigs, drink and lippy is about it. I did have an egg and cress sandwich there though last time and bought my first copy of Edge in about 87 years there too.

    Toying with a Vita but I dunno... Cave are still awfully quiet on Vita titles. Might be worth saving the tokens and just put it toward the Tokyo fund. :confused:

    Yeah, the D70 was my favourite camera for a long time(I got some great shots on that thing). Upgraded to a D90 and never liked it, moved to a D3s and also have a D7000 that I really like for certain situations.

    Anyway, I never really shop at the airport much(unless you count Starbucks).

    Oh yeah? ;)

    You should definitely have a browse, like my D3100 purchase, some real good deals can be had in DUB that are well worth grabbing.

    Not often mind you, but when they do come up DUB has some real corkers. The old DBX duty free used to have some cracking deals. Worst I've ever seen is a draw between CDG and YVR. Though CDG is bloody awful, the shops are closed from 10:30am to 7pm. How stupid is that! I got delayed there last year and sat around for the best part of 874 hours with not even so much as the ability to buy a glass of tap water. Even the vending machines have a ****ing siesta! :mad:

    YVR isn't as brutal as CDG but someone nicked my phone from there and ran up a massive cellphone bill (was living in Vancouver at the time and the stupid phone networks charge YOU to receive a call as well as make one. How stupid is that?).

    :mad:

    Yeah, I should really but the good stuff is all airside in DUB and most of my work is done land side unless I'm flying off somewhere.

    You do realise most people are going to be wondering what the hell DBX, CDG and YVR are. They'll thinks its your SD-OCD-OMG-WTF kicking in again :D

    DBX = Dubai
    CDG = Charles de Gaulle
    YVR = Vancouver

    There ya go. :)

    On a retro note, just watching Grosse Pointe Blank on netflix and they had a Doom II arcade machine in it.
    I never knew it existed so went off and had a look and they only made it for the movie, weird :rolleyes:

    I always wondered if that was real or not. Very strange cabinet.

    On the subject of films and Doom, there's one I've been trying to find for years but can't.

    It had a little grunge kid playing Doom in his house. They cycled around a lot on bikes. He also had a Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral shirt. I think it was mid 90s. If anyone knows what I'm on about, give me a shout. It's been driving me mad for years.

    Think they were Future Zone for a few months before becoming Electronics Boutique (That's a stupid name, always seemed like a place a granny might buy a light bulb)

    My local Game closed last year. I do miss it for picking up impulse buys on my lunch break... The Gamestop that I currently have just isn't the same.

    I'm in mood today and something has gotten on the wrong side of me, namely Rage banning me from commenting on their facebook. I'll pissed off at this and I now vow to never buy anything in that store ever again and to never recommend it to anyone looking for games and LPs.
