We just got a new Sky+ box, but the Sky man said we could keep the old Sky Box & that it would work without having a viewing card. Tried to put it on a different TV & it says no Satellite Signal can be received so does anyone know if it will work, and if so, how? Thanks

Obvious/silly question, but did the installer run an extra cable to the other room for the old box? You don't need a viewing card to view the FTA channels alright.

Well he gave my dad an extra cable, so he can put it in himself. I think I've figured out how to work it now but have to wait til it stops raining for me to go outside to connect it to the Sky Dish!

I'll be in the same boat as OP and I hope they dont mind me piggybacking on this thread. I'm thinking of getting the Sky HD box and move the old Sky box to another room, I can tun a cable to the dish.

    My quastions are:

Will I be able to view programmes saved on the Sky+ box?
What stations will I have - I take it it's the FTA stations.
Will the Sky+ button work now?
Anything else I need to know or should consider beofre going ahead with the change?

    Thanks in advance.

Without a card in the old Sky+ box you won't be able to watch recorded programmes (watch 'em all now before you do the switch)

You'll be left with the fta channels only-no RTE. There's a million threads already asking that question.

    Recording won't work.

Still it's handy to use for fta in a second room (you can put the card out of the new box in it if you need to watch Sky on it but you can only view basic channels-no Sport or Sky Movies and it still won't record)

I use Sky boxes for fta in other rooms and they're grand-the missus finds 'em easier to use than fta boxes.Have all the fta channels set as favourites so it's only a matter of using the blue button to scroll through them.

Anything else I need to know or should consider beofre going ahead with the change? You will be left with an EPG still populated with all the encrypted channels, which includes the Irish channels also encrypted.

    Thanks in advance.

If you would only be using one box at a time, you might be better off using a video sender.

Pair the video sender with the spare skybox to get best of both worlds,it's a pain in the ass if you are watching something in another room only to find Eastenders or Disney suddenly appears in the middle of it-that's the biggest drawback of a video sender.
