Applying for an Internship

I hate myself for doing it and I hate the scheme and what it represents but I applied for a few internship positions today :(

I've been looking for work for over 12 months there is just nothing out there for me in the Clare/Limerick/Galway area
I've applied for hundreds of positions where I didn't even get an acknowledgement

I've done interviews for jobs to be told that I'm either over qualified or my qualifications/experience are too broad and not specialised enough for the role I'd applied for

It really is getting me down I need to get out of the house before I crack up so I applied for a few internships knowing that more than likely even if I get one I'm probably not going to learn much, I certainly amn't going to earn much but I'm hoping it might keep the insanity at bay for a few months because honestly job hunting is really getting me down :(

It can be hard to hold out for the position you want and sometimes holding out doesnt work out. At least your showing employers that your willing to work and your willing to learn new skills. Theres not a lot of choices open to the unemployed these days but things will change. In the meantime your cv will have experience rather than a hole in it. As the old saying goes "Something is better than nothing."

I'm not doing it to get something on my CV
I'm doing it so that I have an actual reason to get up in the mornings and so that I'll have someone to talk other than my OH and the kids (who are the only ones I get to see these days)

I'm doing it for my sanity because I am slowly going insane and getting more and more depressed every day because I can't see the light at the end of the tunnel anymore :(

    I'm an accountant
I have a degree & post grad qualifications
I'm restricted to Clare/Limerick/Galway because I have a mortgage & kids in Clare

I think you would be mad to do it, have you considered freelancing? I mean you have loads of experience, an internship just isn't for you.

There isn't enough work out there around this neck of the woods :(
I was offered 10 hours a month with a lad I used to work

Well maybe its an option but your childcare costs alone would eat up your payments. Would you consider volunteering for a few hours a week, there are lots of charities that need help with Direct Mail lists and things of that nature.

As quoted above , if you want to work for free do it for a charity or other worthwhile organisation.Try the CE schemes , 20hrs a week so you still have time to look for work and also at least some of the ce jobs are actually helpful to the community

While the idea of internships may work in an booming economy , at the moment they are being used as free labour for companies. One of the many "internships" currently offered on Fas is a 6 month work placement for a trainee tyre fitter!! That is nothing more than a tyre centre who don't want to pay for an extra pair of hands on the job.

Just looking through the trades section on fas and there is lot of Wpp for junior surveyors , engineers and architects. All those business are so busy that they can take on interns but they're not busy enough to keep on their qualified paid staff.
As I said these internships are nothing but a way for companies to get staff for free.

Lots of charities and non profits would kill (not literally) to get an Accountant on their Board or working a few hours a week for them. Try boardmatch.ie or volunteer.ie
