  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,584 ✭✭✭TouchingVirus

Nope, wouldn't take it. I'm at ease with my fate to die at some point, hopefully I'll have done all the things I want to at that stage like have kids, explored the world etc.

I'm nearly 30. This would possibly be the perfect time for me to take such a pill.

Yes I would. Though I would want to consult my wife and family. I wouldn't want to be left as the only one who took it and have to watch them all grow old while I don't.

As long as you don't loose the power to get Inebriated and get a woody Immortality is fine with me.

A man offers you a pill.

    -Decline.
    -Accept.

You have chosen decline. You live your life on the planet the way evolution has made you. Grow old, die and therefore appreciate the time you have here instead of being given free reign over all time to become indifferent to everything around you.

    But immortality- Fcuk yeah!

I never deal in absolutes...oh sweet death, then again if they're still showing Friends on E4 in 4301 AD then I'd be thinking "Could this immortality beeeeee anymore annoying"

I don't think it's that easy. It's not until you choose to be done, it's FOREVER.

not to mention you can still get sick/injured with his pill

imagine living in pain and knowing you would never be able to avail of the sweet sweet release of death

the longer you would live the higher the probability of getting seriously injured/ill etc would become...no one is that care

    fcuk that pill

now if the OP asked me if I wanted to be a vampire (the glamorous powerful lust for life (s) blood type with class and style etc....i reckon I could put in a couple of hundred years at that before I would drop myself out of a plane into the blazing sunlight

An near limitless time to actually explore the world and have new experiences? Yes, how awfully depressing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,814 ✭✭✭TPD

Probably would, yeah. I'm sure you'd go mad soon enough once the universe ends, so infinity wouldn't seem so boring. Also, it'd be nice to see just how advanced humans get.

Well, first of all, my entire family and (current) friends would be dead. Second of all, and most importantly, as per the OP's post you can still get sick or injured. What if you were involved in an accident and rendered permanently paralysed, living in a wheelchair, on a ventilator and needing to be fed through a tube? Then that would be your eternity. Of course that might never happen, but if you're here forever then, let's face it, there's plenty time for such accidents. God, no way would I take that pill. No thanks.

I don't see how. Forever is finite so you would eventually stop. Unless you survive the universe going dead. That would be crap. But scientifically based immortality? Nope that would be cool.
The majority of those reasons are very bogus. If you live long enough to not die you'll evolve along with everyone else. Your mind would be augmented by external means etc. I'd be very shocked if a large amount of humans won't be functionally immortal in a 1000 years. Likely much sooner.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

So? you'd get new ones. All of us lose family and friends to death at some stage anyway. Impossibly rare is the person who hasn't attended a funeral. Your family and friends would be replaced by new ones as happens already. Funny enough studies on the longest lived people show they tend to be less affected by the deaths of those around them or for much shorter periods of time. Makes sense.

Nope again. Injuries that would screw you up now will be easily curable in time. If with this pill you can get sick, by definition you can get healthy again.
Of course that might never happen, but if you're here forever then, let's face it, there's plenty time for such accidents.
Oh certainly sooner or later you would be involved in an accident, but it wouldn't be the end of the world in most cases.

The way he's worded it makes it a lot like the immortality that Tolkien's elves had - they would live forever unless sufficiently fucked up.
    Probably by an Orc.

    Isn't that a nightmarish vista?

would there be any room for new humans? wouldnt the ones that lived longest build up the most resources/power etc the longer they live maybe reducing our numbers

    or

instead how would you manage a situation where people dont fcuk off and die but instead hang around building up in their billions?

Not quite, you'd still have people dying from massive traumatic accidents for a start. Very likely artificial population control would take over. Children would no longer be an imperative nor a right. They're a biological imperative largely because of individual mortality, remove that and the organism would adapt in a different direction. As for room for new humans? Well the earth is pretty big and could take more if done in a sustainable way. The minds that would come up with this level of technology would likely do this anyway. Secondly we wouldnt have to stay on earth. We could colonise Mars which would take up a lot of the slack for thousands of years. If we "upload" to evolved artificial receptacles for our consciousness then extrrem environments would not be an issue anymore. Then the stars themselves take up the slack. We could be a consciousness, a new human spreading through the galaxy all interconnected for millions of years. Maybe longer.

There's presumably going to be quite a bit of time between the earth becoming uninhabitable and the end of the universe.

True but it leaves you a lot of time to explore. To watch new stars being born and supporting planets and life. Of course if we're the only life...
