No, surely they would have to setup an rte2 HD channel first?

RTE are keeping RTE Two HD on Saorview only as they want to encourage people to switch to Saorview.

Saorview is not a competing platform to Sky or UPC.

I suppose that our high and mighty..not, RTE, want people with sky to install an aerial on the roof and buy a another box for under the telly.

just to watch RTE in Hd...

Will go down this route i think not..

    Isn't choice a wonderful thing.

In a rare moment of joy, the Saorview channels came in lovely on my TV last night for a while, and I noticed that while the show broadcast on RTE TWO was in HD and a HD logo was being shown, the DOG was very bright and fuzzy and obviously not also in HD. I hope that RTE get some sense soon and make the logo for the HD version much more discreet and make it in a HD resolution. It looks very amateur as it is.

The DOG will be displayed in HD when the programme is HD. If it was fuzzy then what you were watching was upscaled.

Well it's a choice between a once-off fee for RTE Two in HD quality or a monthly fee to Sky for SD quality RTE.

Disagree..... The amount of people ditching Sky and just watching FTA satellite channels (on their old Sky box!!!!) and Irish channels via Saorview is unreal. Officially they may not be competing but they are a viable alternative. And the big hook: THEY'RE FREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

They are ignoring the Broadcasting Act by doing so. They are supposed to offer all of their channels on a "must offer-must carry" basis.

Having said that, I think they will eventually offer the channels on other platforms. I believe at least one of the smaller cable players is carrying the Saorview channels (I think its Magnet but not sure right now). Its only a matter of time before they become available on UPC, at any rate, if not Sky. Public opinion will force them to. Their own staff (who, since they are headquartered in Dublin, are almost certain to be UPC or Sky subscribers) will force them to eventually.

As per the Broadcasting Act 2009 the PSBs (RTÉ 1&2, TV3 and TG4) "must offer" their channels to other platforms UPC, Sky etc. Irish operators such as UPC "must carry" the PSB channels. For UK operator Sky it will be their choice to carry the channels. If Sky choose not to carry the channels any grievance will be with Sky.

RTÉ said in a consultation last year its channels/services would be offered to all digital platforms following a short technical and market testing period.

The Feb 2011 Ministerial Decision on the new RTÉ channels require
    2. RTÉ must act so as to ensure the new services and channels are made available on
all platforms as soon as practicable in accordance with the “must offer”/“must
    carry” obligations set out in the Broadcasting Act 2009;

Don't almost all new flatscreen tellys have a Digital Television Tuner in them now removing the need for an extra box?
Also I don't to watch RTE meaning Rat Kenny and the likes in HD but I do want to watch the rugby world cup matches in HD :)

Probably, DVB-T tuner but the problem could be the on board video decoder. Saorview requires MPEG-4 L4.0, some may only have an MPEG-2 (UK freeview) decoder.

    This from RTÉNL
If you currently receive the four Irish Free-To-Air television channels (RTÉ One, RTÉ Two, TV3 & TG4) on your television via a subscription or pay service You May Choose To Move To SAORVIEW But You DO NOT HAVE TO. Analogue Switch Off (ASO) does not impact on your current method of television reception or television set.
