Ivan Yates on Olympians

Anyone hear Ivan Yates on Newstalk interviewing the London 2012 hopefuls yesterday morning? Didn't hear the whole thing just clips George Hook (thankfully Geoge said Ivan was a clown) played later on but by all accounts Yates was pretty disrespectful to them. He basically told Gillick he shouldn't get any money when we don't have enough to pay our teachers. He also pretty much said Gillick should be doing it with no funding to preserve the amateur status!!! Yates was going on about it again this morning basically saying if they're not medalling then we should drop them. I found it very offensive from a guy who made his money out of an industry hugely funded by tax payers money. Then again I find a lot of things he comes out with offensive and he is in the business of sh*t stirring (he's a radio troll) so I should probably just ignore him. Was happy to hear though most texts in didn't agree and were happy their tax payers money was funding athletes.

I think anyone who makes the A-standard and qualifies for the olympics has already proved all they need to prove and anything extra is a bonus - getting to a final in a major championships is amazing. We think its fantastic when an Irish football player makes the starting 11 on a premier league side (becoming one of the Top 300 players in England) but think a runner finishing just outside medals in a major championships final is a failure

Ivan Yates has been receiving pension payments of almost 50,000 euro a year since he was 43.

..I take Yates with a pinch of salt, wouldn;t worry too much about his opinions really....I do like when he rants about polliticians though..at least he does so with some experience...

Dont think most rational people would consider this a "failure".?? 'spose it could be like P HArrington in the golf for a while before he won anything big, - I would imagine it is frustrating as a spectator or fan if someone you follow, consistently misses out on the big time by a small margin...

When you say experience, you really mean hypocrisy.

Ivan Opinion is one of the most sickening media commentators in a media choc a block with sickeners. Unfortunately there is an audience for his style of ****talk in the current climate.

He's only looking for this type of comment. The best response to this type of nonsense and begrudgery is to ignore it completely.

That's what Yates does, he's a wind up merchant over every topic, earlier this week it was male leaving cert students. As long as you know what he's at it can be entertaining to listen to some of the responses to him, and you probably wouldn't have taken notice of him if it was a topic you had no interest in.

    Normally you'd be right.
But the way he went at David Gillick yesterday, was a disgrace to journalism.
He didn't read out my text either.

It really was an absolute disgrace. Total ignorance and I don't buy this thing about him being a wind up merchant. He's just a tosser. End of story.

David Gillic and our other funded athletes are decent hard working people. Ivan Yates is a parasite who made his living from legalised robbery of gambling. He then made more money as one of this countrys aristocratic political class. He continues to collect a sizeable pension funded by us the taxpayer. I have more respect for what lives under the rim of my toilet bowel than I have for him.Id much rather see my tax euro go towards funding David Gillic ambitions than into the bank accounts of millionaire ex politicans who helped ruin this country.

I listen to the Newstalk morning show on a daily basis so am used to his approach. I heard the interview in question in it's entirety and initially when he went at Gillick I was disappointed. However I felt he showed some balance by discussing the expense of competing with the sailor and discussing how she is funded.

My take on it is that he was the way he was with Gillick as opposed to the others as he has the highest profile of those interviewed and was more able for it.

That's just my take on it, I do think he handled it badly though and in soundbite would have sounded appalling. I see the real problem being the hook show's sampling of previous shows to stir ****. I didn't hear the discussion on hook but can imagine it having heard previous efforts of a similar type from him.

Own goal on the approach by Yates but there will be a lot of people who are struggling to get by who would question any sports funding. But that is another debate entirely.

Only heard his references this morning. His argument of "we need to pay social welfare" might hold up if some effort was made by a party he was or still is a member of to remove/reduce benefits from those who never have or will never make any effort to contribute to society, before the talk about remove funding from people who may or may not bring/restore pride in the country down the line.

Maybe he and the OCI should look at how our best medal hopes in London faired in their first games or early career. You dont get their without a lot of hard work and it takes time in years to get to a level where medals are possible.

As they say, you just couldn't make it up.

Yates was just provoking debate. It's his job. With the state this country is in question where every cent is going is not a bad idea.

He was a little crass with Gillick but to be fair Gillick answered all his questions where he could.

The TD pension issue though is something else and maybe that should be questioned by him too.
