It sounds like something is amiss with this. There are some suggestions that the reason behind the young boxers dismissal from the squad is very trivial.

It's a shame that the future sports stars of this country have to go to such lengths to maintain their place in the national squad.

Has anyone any further information on this?

It was only a matter of time before something like this happened. This can of worms has been brewing for a while with the way selections have been made throughout the weight divisions. Some might say that this is the kick up the a**e that the IABA needed to get their house in order.

    We live in hope. . . .

I have a feeling there will be lots more controversy once the senior squad for the world's is announced on Saturday.

Yeah thats what im interested to know also. If he is only on a 5k sports grant you can be sure that there is someone in the background with a serious gripe with the association because high court proceedings dont come cheap!!

If you ask me, the whole association is corrupt. From the top down there are sweet deals being done and too many people at the top table have vested interests in clubs they are affiliated with or boxers from these clubs and you worry that these close ties have a bearing on "off the cuff" decisions made in relation to the elite programme / box offs / grants etc etc etc.

Simply put there is a complete lack of transparency and the national sports council have a lot to answer for. There should be very clear rules governing the criteria applied to who represents the national team at major tournaments and if there is to be a box off required the criteria should be apparent from the start. Either you have first refusal as national champ or you dont, and if you dont then who gets picked for the box offs should be known and this should apply across ALL weight divisions and not just the divisions where the "golden boys" didnt qualify. In my opinion the only time a box off should be warranted is if there are 2 boxers in the same weight division who have won national/world/european titles in the same year or in some cases where a former champion didnt get to compete in the nationals due to injury.

this happens in most sports, i know of a kid who was on an irish squad because of his dad, he would not make the bench in most teams at club level.

Christy Joyce who got called is from the same club as the high prefromance director/coach.

Thats why O'Reilly went to court it seems.

Saw him in acton last week at box offs. He beat Brabazon easily and I thought he was unlucky not to get the decision against Sheehan in the final. A serious prospect.

Meanwhile, the IABA confirmed today following a Boxing Council meeting that Michael O’Reilly, of the Portlaoise BC, will line out for Ireland at welterweight at the 2011 European Youth Championships which begin on Monday at the Citywest Hotel in Dublin.
