cooling fan on cooker

    I have a cooker that has a cooling fan on it and from the start when it was bought a good few years ago, the fan was always a bit dodgy like coming on at strange times and when it was coming on it would take a while to get going and interfering with the radio while it was coming on.Now it is staying on all the time so I had to unplug it temporary.I took the back off the cooker to get access to the fan to disconnect it, but is there any long term damage that can happen without the fan going.I would have to go digging deeper into the cooker to check a thermostat or whatever is the problem.The power also controls the lighter to the burners too.

    long term damage ? yes ,you could burn your house down when the cooker overheats and cant cool cause the overheat fan is disconnected

    get someone in that knows what they doing - is it a belling ?

    it is an offence to render a safety device inoperable on a gas appliance - that 'cooling fan' does more than cool - it can disperse the products of combustion from your oven grill so they don't get reburned and create carbon monoxide (CO) - you are putting your health at risk - reconnect it and get a registered service engineer to fix the problem

    and get a carbon monoxide monitor for your house -

    Unbelievable what:mad:.Did I say I was going to leave it like that permanent?.As usual ask a simple question here and some folks get up on their high horses,as if they never done anything wrong themselves:rolleyes:.I am WELL aware of the dangers of carbon monoxide fumes with it being odourless and all.So lose the attitude will ye, I will get it sorted OK!

    You should not have disconnected it at all.Thats what I find unbelievable..Im not on any high horse,I am a registered gas installer like other guys on here we are the ones who have to sort out D.I.Yers unsafe and illegal attempts at repairing their own gas appliances

    Just an update in case anyone wanted to know:(.I got my new oil fired boiler serviced today one year after it was installed by the guy that put it in.By chance the same guy does gas fired boilers and does work for calor gas cookers as well.
    I said to him about this problem I am having and he took it apart and checked the switch thats connected to the door for the grill.I said to him that it used to come on with the oven too, but he said that its not supposed to do that, its only for to cool down the knobs on the front when the grill is on.Nothing to do with the oven. Apparently newer models have a metal plate to deflect the heat.

    He originally thought it was gone but further checks revealed it was a thermostat type component (not sure exactly).To change this would be both time consuming and expensive.He suggested that a simple switch to turn the fan on and off with the grill would be a cheaper option.He said the design of the door was fine and stressed that it was not dangerous.

    if that makes you feel better . but I can tell you now he is misinformed . if he is an rgi he will know or should know that he can't alter or bypass any safety device on a cooker , so an on off switch will not do as it against what the manufacturer specifies so he can't sign off the cert as complying with is813.
    if he had your cooker apart he must issue you with a cert .
    now I have worked for years on cookers and I can tell you that that fan should come on with the oven - it reacts to temperature not just your grill or oven independently . the secondary function of that fan is to disperse flue gases from the oven out through the front ( sometimes through a vent) to keep them moving so they don't get re burned and cause carbon monoxide - it's a simple but effective method . if you are in any doubt you can ring rgi or the cooker manufacturer and see what they say .

    think of this logically - if that fan is to cool the cooker knobs from overheating where does it get it's cool air supply from if the oven or grill is on ?
    the primary function of the fan is to protect the cooker wiring by circulating the warm air away(containing the products of combustion-secondary)

    So this expert said it was time consuming and expensive to replace a component on an oven???I cant think of a any part on an oven that takes more then 30 mins to replace. He has suggested adding a new switch to bring the fan on?Is this a joke?
    Please dont let him work on your cooker,im not trying to be smart or arrogant..im thinking of your safety

    Interesting view on the matter.The way it is is that the fan is mounted high up on the back of the cooker, roughly above the grill.If the grill is on, I assume that the heat etc goes out the grill door as it is open and not out the back. The air from the fan is sucked from the back through the cooker and out through a vent at the front above the grill but below the control knobs.
    If the oven is on,I am guessing that some of the heat goes out the back and up through the slots at the back of the cooker top.So I would think that the fan sucks this and puts out through the same vent above the grill as before, but if the grill is not been used then the door is closed and can only escape through a small gap in the door.
    Since the fan is mounted so high up, I cant see how the fan would cool down the oven unless it does it as described above.Might well be a good idea to contact the manufacturer/shop that sold it and get their opinion, thanks a lot.

    Well the component was mounted between the oven and grill so would have remove the whole grill to get at it.I don't know if that's right or wrong but that's what he said.I do know that before it definitely did come on and off while the oven was on, so the mind boggles:(.
