to give an reasonable objective view rather than defend what the currently drive to the death ( often despite it being sh1t ) ?

reason I say it is I just was talking to my brother in law who always has "the best car possible to own" currently and will be trotted out as an alternative no matter what people say they are looking to buy - be it sports car or mpv.

how many here give an objective opinion of their car ?

I like my car.. would not say this one is my favourite ever.. and I can say I did have a couple of duffers.. Primera 2.0TD and Manta 1.8 Auto (a long time ago).. Worst ever.. A Class 170Cdi Auto.

I've owned two cars which were pretty crappy - a Kangoo and a Seicento, but both of them suited me at the time, and they were cheap.

    I've never bought a car I didn't like - why would I?

I dont drive the worlds most desirable car, but it gets me from A to B for now.

I drive a 1.6 corolla and im raking up the miles on her (10k since may) and shes been pretty bulletproof since then, minus keeping an eye on the oil levels.

I have had many cars but owned very few of them so I can be very frank about each car. My current car, VW Passat 1.6 TDi Comfort, is quite good and the engine, although lacking in power, is very very economical and reliable.

Would I buy one out of my own money? No.

My 1997 Laguna 1.8 RT petrol.....have it 7 years and I have done 110k miles in it so far. (Even though I haven't driven it for a year in my ownership). Almost 200k on it in total.
Its been fine except for a problem with the tdc sensor. 1st time cleaned it, lasted a year. Then changed for a new one. Fine for a few months then would start, then wouldn't, then would again for a few days.
Cut out the plugs and wired up together. Fine for 6 months then wouldn't start last week, couldn't get it to start until I got the missus to turn over the engine an I gave the wires a wiggle!
Eventually started but then the next day nothing....so I've gone about 5 or 6 inches into the wiring, snipped it and rejoined it with fresh wire and its been fine for the last week.

Other than that and having to replace some wheel bearings twice its been perfect.

Massive 997cc Nissan March 1998....150% reliable...even letting it off the road for two years didn't do anything.
But the car is not for motorways! (Even though I did manage to drive to London and around England in it!) Wouldn't buy another, its just because it was my first car and is a high spec jap import did I buy it.

Drive to death in my case

Very valid reason for it I believe.

I'm driving a 1998 E39 523i and she's a beauty. Navy with nice tasteful alloys and black leather sports. There is 110k miles on it and she has given me zero trouble over the last 7-8 years. i'm driving a mitsubishi colt gl it is my second car as the first one i owned was a rover 400 and it was the worst pile of junk i ever seen. the rovers headgasket kept breaking so i dumped it and got this colt gl. it's not a lovely car by any means but I like it a lot and it gets me around without any problems plus cheap insurance and cheap to run great little car all the same.:pac:

    Not many so far :D

MGZR: I have had it from new (03), the steering wheel is off center, the brakes are spongy (always have been), the ride is awful unless you are on a new motorway, the pedals are offset from a central seating position (opposite to steering wheel), there is more plastic than a lego factory..........

I could go on but I like the car :D

Owned Rx-8 - posted Rx-8's were the nuts.
Sold Rx-8 (with difficulty) - can now admit it was a nightmare.
Fanboys are everywhere and we all do it from time to time. They are not giving advice they are justifying their decisions to themselves. Massive boot all the same...oh wait

    I like my car,

its bad points include people peeing in the passenger seat and the fuel bills this entails.

I can be more objective but these are the finer points.

06 2.0 TDI Passat with DSG box

    Pros:
    - It's big, comfortable and perfect for motorway cruising
    - Massive boot (hey it's a VAG after all.. not just the Octavia's get em :p)
    - Not too hard on juice for the size - €95 gets you 70L which will do 1100km
    - It's a lot better looking than the new model which looks like a face-lifted B5 to me but with the B6 interior (I'd feel cheated myself :))
    - The DSG box is fantastic

    Cons:
    - Servicing and parts ain't cheap. I've yet to spend less than €400 per service and with the mileage I do (1100 km per week) that adds up!
    - Suffers the same problems with the DMF as other modern diesels (€1100 please). Also a known injector problem with this engine that VW are now only half-heartedly admitting to.
    - It can be a pain to park/reverse - especially at night with only one reverse light (oh for the symmetry of my old B5.5)
    - Unless you buy it new, you won't ever get everything you want on it, what with VW's extensive "options" lists

    I like my car.

It's reasonably economical, great spec, more than enough power for my needs and has space that I need. I like the way it looks (that's an my opinion) and it suits my needs better than others I looked at.

As for negatives, it hasn't been particularly reliable, it's got a crap image if you're one if those people that cares about that and it's the butt of many a joke in here and other forums from people that have no experience of it whatsoever. Oh and it's not my first choice of colour:D

I'd reccommend one to someone if they want something relatively powerful economical with enough room for clobber.

    2000 Fiat Bravo Van

    Pros:
    • I built it myself :)
    • As a direct result of that, I ironed out nasty niggles, bought lots of new parts and put in some toys that weren't available from the factory such as a 6 speed box, Alfa 156 interior, Marea front etc
    • I installed copper lines and new uprated brakes all round so it stops better than a standard 1.2
    • A its a van, no seats in the back so only 2 inside maximum
    • Its very comfortable to sit in
    • Its a brilliant van to drive :D
    • Glued to the road in the corners, no body roll atall
    • Its rather economical at the pumps :)

    Cons:
    • Its still a ball of crap as previous owners ragged it, still showing scars of that
    • It was crashed and repaired by a monkey
    • It rusted severely and is still rusting
    • It eats heater resistors
    • Its impossible to tint the rear window correctly
    • It can be difficult to park due to the van panels
    • As a result of the 6 speed box, the left wheel rubs off it before full lock so no full lock on the right
    • I can't drive it down bumpy uneven roads due to its suspension setup
    • It can be very loud
    • It requires constant attention to keep it happy
    • Its currently sitting in my yard broke

I wouldn't get rid of it mind you, it suits me perfect. But thats just me, I guess thats what keeps me busy during the daylight... ;)

I was a bit of an Mazda MPS fanboy when I had the 3, but it genuinely was class. I want to own one again someday.

Wasnt a Holden, GM or Vauxhall fanboy when I had the Monaro

Not and Audi or RS nut now with an RS6 even though I love the car, but prob would be if it work without something breaking for more than a couple of days in a row!

I know what you mean though, if you see a car make or model in a thread title, you can almost guarantee you will know that a particular user will be involved and what they will be saying!

    Octavia VRS
    BMW M3
    Rovers
    Honda Civic
    Honda Integra

Being a few I can think of which will be defended to the death! :pac:

Does anyone think its funny to see people who do this, get a different car and then change their tune?

    LOL

I love my car,it's reliable, the engine is fantastic and it handles like a go kart.

It is however, not particularly practical,it's a bit nuts in the wet,it's very noisy at motorway speeds and it's got somewhat of a "hairdresser" image to certain people

The only complaint I have about my car (S3) is that it's a demon on the juice. It handles good, reasonably quick and so far pretty reliable. If time turned back to when I was looking at buying a car, i'd buy it again.

When I had the RX-8, I loved it to bits. The only thing I dind't like was the 0 torque at low revs. Now I have a Mazda6 MPS which is everything the RX8 was (and lots more) without the 0 torque!

I used post in the many thousands of threads about RX8s but I would always give the pro's and con's as I saw them. I still think the RX8 was a brilliant car, unlike fitzgeme who has changed his tune haha

I really like my car, I can honestly say if I was never to purchase another car but this one I'd be happy, fits all my needs 100% its a perfect size for me (6' 3') and I can extend the seat fully and the people behind me have lots of room, throw down the back seats and make a big load lugger. Performance wise to use that old cliché "its the best of both worlds", will happily cruise at 160 all day or sit at 100 when taking it handy, and will give the boy racers a bit of a shock.. :o

    Bad bits
Boot could be a bit bigger, Clutch after 220,000km is very soft, badge snobs (I seen one BMW driver sticking his fingers down his throat as I drove past him ahhhaha) don't seem to like it. I don't let anyone else drive it. :o People seem to scratch it a lot and slag it.. WTF.?

    Same car and
    Almost everything he said.
Except for i didn't get any reliability issues yet, Not that i would expect to as I bought it new and have only 17.5k on it.

    Love the color I picked..

    Cons??
Biggest one being listening to others knocking them that never owned nor drove one.

    Would I buy another one?

    Yes and no

Yes pending the new model coming in '12/'13
    Also Cost factor will decide.
Also because I am very pleased with it.

    No.
If the new model is out of my price range.

I have to say, I actually really like that car in general. Before I bought the MPS, I was considering a 2010 model. They come exceptionally well equipped and they look good.

The only thing that put me off was that it was out of my price range.

I always swore I'd never own a VAG car. But there's no denying the economy from the old AHF/ASV diesel engines. So for my 26th car I broke my fast and I bought a 00 toledo. It smelt like a sewer, a guy was shot in the leg in the passenger seat (accidentally), which left a bullet hole. It only had the left half of the front bumper, the boot was covered in duck feathers, the airvents were missing from the dash, and the headrests had shopping lists written on them in biro. But it had tax and test and cost fuc*all. Many people pointed and laughed in traffic, I hated it, and hated it right up until the guy I bought it from bought it back from me! Now I miss it. 60mpg and a lot of character, what more could a man ask for.

Its true, I have changed my tune, but I can forgive myself in that the Rx-8 was my first "fast car" and in comparison to what I had before it was class. Its only with some better cars since that I can see the problems.

Legacy diesel - love the way it goes, grips, sounds, handles and even sounds (really!). Like the fact it's rare and has a few cool features like frameless doors that add a bit of character.

Dislikes - the fact that they've ****ed up the new model!
No fold-down rear seat so can't fit a bike or long item. Sometimes I feel I'd like to be a bit higher - quite low-slung.

I actually try to mention it as seldom as possible though, even when people are looking for recommendations that might suit.

the last 10 yrs worth of my motoring stock
    - 94 Citreon ZX TD Volcane. Cracking car, very underrated. Gutsy
    - 02 Toledo TDI. Very economical/reliable. Handled like a boat though and couldn't keep sumps in it
    - 02 Mondeo diesel. Best car I ever owned (sad I know). Gutsy, sharp chassis, well built and v.reliable. Trumps Passat/Avensis everytime imo.
    - 02 Merc C180. Cramped, underpowered, overpriced
    - 06 CMAX diesel. As per Mondeo except it lets the whole world know you've got kids. Does exactly what it says on the tin
    - 07 Saab 9-3 TiD Wagon. Unreliable, hard suspension, creaky interior, small boot. Those cracking front seats almost redeem the whole car

In summary - Ford ticked most of the boxes of any of the cars listed

Maybe I've read the OP wrong here but what I understood from his question is do any of us give impartial advice on 'recommend me a car' threads?

All I see is people giving the pros and cons of their own car?

Anyhow, to answer (what I think is) the OP's question, everyone is different and likes different things, also we are more likey to recommend cars we individually happen to like as opposed to those we don't. Therefore I doubt there's many of us here that will give completely impartial advice on a car recommendation.

If I'm talking waffle in relation to the OP, my answer is that my car is the best car in the world ever and you would be a fool to buy anything else!

(No - it's not an Octy VRS):pac:

That was my understanding too, it's after turning into a long term owner reviews type of sort of a thing.

I've never suggested anyone buy a petrol ZT in any thread on here, and a few folk could testify I'm not shy about highlighting any likely faults when PM'd either.

I'll give it on anything I've owned but my most recent daily is the Passat:

    Pro's:

    Comfort,
    Reliability,
    Resale,
    Toys,
    Big
    Strong
    Frugal
    Space

    Con's:
    Slow,
    noisy
    dash board squeeks
boring to drive on a back road

    Would I recommend one?

Depends what your looking for. It's comfortable but bloody boring.

I prefer my MGF but couldn't live with it everyday so overall I have a good mix of fun and comfort between the two.

I try to be as objective as I can. Can't say I've ever owned a car I've been mad about.

Objectively, this is my same situation. Frig all of a commute so 22MPG average doesn't bother me. €1204 tax is a headache when it comes around every year, but that's the only time it annoys me. 99% of the cars on the road, even new ones don't come close to the level of spec the car has so the tax a petty inconvenience for the privilege.

728 is only underpowered with 4-5 men in the car, plenty of power all other times.

Forgot to mention I drive the car I always wanted so I couldn't be happier with it.
