Faraday's cage & mobile phones

was listening to 5live a long time ago on weds night/ thursday mornings when they have the naked scientist slot with dr. karl, the australian guy who seems to have an answer to everything, or if not, a really good idea.

someone asked about blocking mobile phone signals legally, and his suggestion was to paint the room with a paint mixed with iron filings, which may create a faraday's cage type effect, and thus electromagnetic signals wouldn't penetrate the room.

would this work?? if so, and if legal since not using a blocker, it'd be a great idea for schools etc.
just wondering. he wasn't too sure when he was answering.

A Faraday cage does tend to inhibit EM radiation too (not just static charge), when the holes of the "cage" are significantly smaller than the wavelength of the radiation. That's how the mesh on the front of your microwave window works. The wavelength of GSM band microwaves is about 15cm.

I don't think an iron filing paint would work mostly because it's not a mesh, it's a particulate. Conduction would be inhibited by whatever is between the iron particles. Fine mesh chicken-wire would probably work though.

On the legality I've no idea... I doubt there's anything in place now to prevent it. Though the cost would hardly seem worth it for a school.
