Failed my test again, under compleatly diferent headings to my last. This time under observation/progresion/hazards 10 blue flags to which I had not had any in the previous one.

Obeservation when turning left 4 and the 1 turning right.

What is the correct procedure for observation when making a turn.
    Currently id
1.Reduce speed and change gear (2nd) if neccesary
    1.check my reir veiw mirror.
    2.Side veiw mirror
    3.Signal
4.and a quick glance again on the inside mirror as im turning the corner

    If im stoped
1.move to the side of the road im making the turn on
    2.look right/left
3.quick glance in the side veiw mirror im making the turn on,and edge out onto the road.

    Correct or not?

felt I was a little unlucky under the progression but i suppose its an interpretation.was alittle unlucky as I got 2 possibly 3 straight away coming at the first exit turn form the test centre.A lady beckoned me to turn left flashed her lights, checked my inside mirror then moved out slowy she had changed her mind and decided to go ahead of me :(

Always mirror first! You're reducing speed first which the tester might pick up on.

The same for when you're pulling off to the left or right. Mirrors first then observer oncoming traffic and move off.

I failed my first test on observation and progression.. I realized later i was only moving my eyes to check everything so the tester maybe thought i wasn't checking properly.. I made sure to move my head when checking mirrors and over my shoulder for lane changes the next time..

The progression is just being confident.. Being a bit quicker when being beckoned to be let out or spotting a gap in the traffic..

    Good luck next time around!

Make sure to have a glance into the road before you turn - you are checking are there any obstructions on the road (e.g. a van pulled over near the junction, you may need to alter your turning path to get past it, or if traffic is backed up on the road).

So if you were taking a right turn, the procedure would be:

Mirrors (rear + right wing), then signal
Reduce speed to the appropriate speed for the turn, then change to an appropriate gear (often 2nd).
If it is safe to go, check your rear + right wing mirror again before turning the wheel (checking for bikes or motorbikes that may be approaching you) - as you are checking your right wing mirror, look into the road you are about to turn into.
If everything looks ok, proceed to make the turn.

The same applies for left turns, just replace right with left. Remember, if you have to stop and wait for a gap to proceed, the information you have previously acknowledged in your mirrors no longer applies - make sure you have an updated picture of what is going on behind you!

Thats what I do,Its a given that your looking ahead onto the other road.Id also take a very quick glance in the other direction before I make the turn.Incase something comes from out of knowere car/cyclist/pedestrian.

The test is Really baffling, and so frustrating

Hmm, well that sounds right to me! An important one (which I think you are doing) is to look left and right even at a green traffic light - you are looking for red light jumpers (or even amber gamblers if you are one of the first to go) or emergency service vehicles approaching that may want to get across the junction - if you see an ambulance, for example, and he wants to get through the red light, he won't go until it's safe, so often it helps them if you just wait at the line until they are clear, then proceed with your manoeuvre!

And I failed my first test for progression, which was annoying (but luckily, easily fixable) - I got 7 Grade 2 faults - 4 of them for Progress on the Straight (which is why I failed), 1 of them for progress turning right, another for progress turning left, and another one for doing the turnabout in 5 turns when I could have safely done it in 3 turns!

Best of luck with the next test!

Yeah heres hoping 4th times a charm :o,its just so annoying how one tester sees compleatly diferent things that the other think is fine

Bit of advice, a good tip my instructor told me was when turning right or even left to kind of lean forward so you can look into the road left and right and fully see what traffic is coming. This may be where you were getting marked for observation.

Dear lord, sounds like it's impossible to just drive naturally at the driving test - is it really necessary to overdo your every move like you guys are talking about? I mean, seems to me that's just adding risk as you're not focusing on actual safety, but more on making sure the bloke next to you sees that you're looking...

But meh, guess that's the way it has to be..
