Hi, does anyone know anything about the Dipoma in Italian, an evening course at NUIG. I am interested in this course but as it would entail almost a 3 hour round trip once a week, am wondering if it's manageable and possible to do along with a full time teaching job. Also as my main aim in doing the course is to enjoy something new, is it fun?

    Grateful for any info,thanks

Well i am doing the Irish diploma which i would imagine would be very similar content wise . I enjoy it, there are different levels according to your ability so it will only improve your skills in that language. The course in 1st year (Again this is an irish diploma but i would imagine a diploma in any language would be similar content wise) is very manageable . An essay, a written exam - comprehension, letter etc and an oral exam. Aswell as this each homework exercise counts towards your final mark also so it is again easy to pass 1st year.

It is a different experience to a classical classroom experience, classes are smaller and i believe it is more conversational based, rather than literacy which is easier to enjoy. While grammar is covered very much, the classes are through the language, which is easier to follow the more classes you go to and will very much improve your skills.

The diplomas are what you make of them, if you do your work you will be rewarded.

Again i have to reiterate that this is the irish diploma course and that it may be 100% different to what you will be doing, but i suppose someone can correct me if it is different.

I did the evening diploma in Italian a couple of years ago. I really enjoyed it. The staff are lovely and no existing knowledge of the language is assumed. It's certainly manageable with a full time job. There's a lot of continuous assessment, with homework each week. As long as you keep on top of that, you'll have no problem.
As well as the language, grammar etc, there's a good focus on conversation and Italian culture.
Most of the participants in the class are there to enjoy themselves and pick up a new language. My group was a real mix of people and we all got along great. There's a coffee break half way through each evening and we got to know each other very well. Some of us are still in touch, two years after graduating.
