Ebay has a good selection of shooting sticks, however the cheapest are Deerhunter telescopic ones at around €22 - €28 excluding shipping. I bought a set of these of Sean in Stakelums for €25. So either look around a few dealers or order from Ebay whichever is easiest.

There is also a set for €15 for a telescopic tripod set from china. Usually i wouldn't touch ones that are too cheap, but i've gotten stuff from this supplier before and they work the finest.

Guys what type of sticks do you normally use or find best for stalking? Bi pod or tri pod or what?

So true, thats the tool the moment but would'nt mind knowing what the other guys find good. Seen a set at a game fare last year with 4 legs and was a dead steady rest but not so sure how they would be when trying to stalk a mountain, 2 legs can be enough to manage. To be honest I do most my shooting off a bi pod prone where possible. Or try find a natural rest but always have a set of sticks just n case. Unfortunatley I find it hard to group say 5 shots better than 3/4 inches at 100 meters off the sticks sometimes worse. So I avoid when at all possible. But I have the HCAP range test next week, and need to shoot standing and sitting/kneeling. But when the season starts Hazel it is.......

Just so you know during the HCAP the sticks are only used at 60 and 40 yards. Even then they're optional. I'll be around that weekend so if you're stuck i'll have mine with me you're welcome to them if you haven't gotten sorted by then.

In the process of making some sticks as presents for Christmas. Nothing too fancy, The hazel I cut this time last year and they have been in the house. Yacht varnish sand the top to a nice rounded finish. If your going fancy some araldite and a 6mm threaded bar, Id say you guys will have plenty of antler:D ahem ahem;)

    No worries. Will do.
If your going fancy some araldite ........

You have to be so quick when using araldite. I used some a while back and the bloody stuff began to set almost immediately. Granted it is some stuff. Will stick anything to anything.

I was trying to make a walking stick but made a balls of the foot. So i cut it shorter and use it for a kneeling stick from time to time. Easy enough to make.

I've made about a half dozen walking sticks, purely as a hobby. They wouldn't be great but its something to pass the time. As for shooting sticks i'll tick with my telescopic ones for the time being.

When I was taking my HCap shooting test I used 6-9 bi-pod at 100m for the prone shots, 13-27 bi-pod used at 27" for the 60m sitting/knelling shots, and tri-sticks at the 40m standing shots.

Come prepared as it takes the pressure off you on the day

Came across these a while ago:

    http://www.skydestok.dk/rifle-stick.htm

A bit costly, but I'm thinking of trying my hand at making one.

They look deceptively simple, I'd say it would be easy make a bad one, and very hard to make a good one

Not a problem. I have received a few requests asking the same. I'll do my best to get as many as i can covered, and i will be in contact with the rest of the ROs, so will try and organise a "surplus" of sticks, etc. If anyone else is stuck just seek out one of the ROs on the morning and ask.

While i'm on the subject lads as mentioned previously be sure you have all the gear you need laid out the night before. Its so easy to get up and head of thinking you have everything. To do the test you will need two sets of things. One is for the range/office, and the other the actual shoot.

    Range/office
    1. License
    2. Insurance card
    3. Any fee (i'm not too sure if you pay on the day or have already done so?)
    Actual shoot
    1. Rifle in case. ( Range rules state all rifles be transported to the range, around the range and generally not in use must be cased)
    2. Bipod or Front rest (bag/sandbag, etc. Not an actual rest like target shooters use. Must be field compliant)
    3. Breach Flag. (Will be provided if you are stuck)
    4. Sticks
    5. Plenty of ammo. (Some lads only bring like 10 rounds. Thing may happen and repeats could be needed so bring enough ammo)
    6. Hearing protection. (Ear defenders preferable. Ear plugs may not suit as there will be alot of rifles being fired)
Another tip lads. Have your rifle zeroed before sitting the test. Too many lads assume or are sure their rifle is zeroed, but on the day its firing high, low, right, left, etc. You will have an opportunity to check your rifle prior to shooting, so please take advantage of it.

@ hunter9 - Apologies for bringing your thread off topic. If you'd like i can split it up?

After trying a number of 3 leg systems, and missed a chance of a shot in time spreading the legs on uneven ground, I personally find a single pole the best. Made in 30 minutes with a piece of sika antler on top. Also makes a good staff when walking rough ground.

2 leg system in the link above looks intresting though.

All the best with your HCAP
