Does anyone know if I can apply to have further work done on my teeth that is not currently covered by medical cards? My teeth are in very poor condition to say the least. I also suffer alot of pain and would require more work than covered by the medical card. I can't cope with it any longer last night has been the worst with the pain being so bad I haven't been able to sleep at all despite taking pain killers started with a mild toothache and have had terrible headache pain running through the left side of my face and left ear. This is ruining me physically and emotionally. Would be very grateful for any advice anyone could give on this.

Sorry to hear OP, sure enough definitive dental treatment is expensive but any dentist should be able to get you out of pain with temporary fillings/ root fillings or even extractions for a relatively cheap price in the meantime. This gets you out of pain and allows you to assess your options and save...

NO ONE SHOULD BE LEFT IN PAIN- THE MED CARD IS A DISGRACE

My advice to people in your situation is to first get a full treatment plan to get you back to health.
This includes; Cleaning, diet advice, oral hygiene advice, fillings, front teeth root canal treatments, extractions and dentures

Then and only then, consider other root canal treatments, crowns, bridges, implants or braces

Don't get tunnel vision and spend all your money on a single front tooth implant and then lose all the rest of your teeth as you have no more money to save them...

    Good luck,
    OS

You are entitled to emergency treatment on your MC if you're in that much pain? Have you been told by a dentist you can't have this treatment or are you just going by what you've heard about whats available?

the pain is coming from a few different teeth and their roots. have seen a dentist and was told it would require a lot more work than covered by medical card. I was hoping there might be some way I could apply to have the further work done. As it stands I can get the root canals but the fillings required when theyre done will use up the 2 free ones. Im terrified at the thoughts the others causing problems will have to be pulled. I cant afford regular false teeth let alone dental implants.

oral surgeon thanks for your reply some good tips there. Diet has had a dramatic change recently as I suffer great pain when chewing certain foods have also had a couple of cracks or breaks just from biting into a sandwich. at this point Im not far off a babies diet eating mainly soft food. Need to try and be realistic that there will not be a good outcome for me at this rate.

The dentist can write to the HSE for approval for a removable partial denture which the often approved. However the ammount they pay the dentists hardly covers the cost of the denture from the lab to them so dont expect many dentists to want to do the treatment. You could try the Dental Hospital if you are willing to wait after having the teeth removed and fixed as the med card will allow.
