Can we have a pimp your society/club thread for 2011/12?

I'm thinking of joining the dance society, tennis club, maybe games society (need more info) and doing the sign language classes.

    Any recommendations???

Two of the instructors are in my course and got a good few people to join. From what I can see it looks fun.

I'll join and make a point of going to climbing this year. I'll likely get bullied into joining Japanese since I know half the committee now and I'll have a course soc too now with the biochemical society too (even if it is all postgrads >_>)

Gamers is board and card games from what I've seen/heard, computer games is catered by sci-fi if that helps your decision in any way.

Games as above is all tabletop/board gaming, console gaming is sorted by SciFi. SciFi always seemed to have its own clique though.

Thinking I'm gonna join DUPA this year, already know the room from DAS so why not.

They are a bit cliquey, but that shouldn't put anyone off, they were all really nice the one time I showed up >_>

The one time I went there was a bunch of jock types playing FIFA. They now show anime so I'm curious.

Was there during freshers, then I realised DUCSS had a better TV :)

Does anyone know if there any sort of humanist/atheist society in Trinity?

Larianne, how did you find the scuba club last year? Not rejoining this year?

Think there was a provisional one this year, a lad in my course was on about it. If they get the numbers for two years/whatever the conditions are they can become a full soc. Can inquire if you like.

I'm the President of Gamers this year, so I'll take this opportunity to do a brief pitch.

In Gamers we play traditional and new board-games, collectible card games such as Magic: the Gathering, wargames such as Warhammer 40K, roleplaying games such as Dungeons and Dragons, and live-action roleplaying (like murder mystery evenings). We'll be running an introductory event for Freshers - Freshycon - all day in Regent House on the Wednesday of Freshers' Week, we have an annual convention in March, and we organise a heavily-subsidised trip to another society's convention every year.

Gamers is a great place to come hang out, as we have an awesome room in Goldsmith Hall that's open a great deal, an active forum at http://forum.leprecon.info, and a lot of great games and events being organised. If anyone wants to know anything more, they can PM me or email trinitygamers@gmail.com.

    Thanks!

I'm going to suggest the fencing club. It's a good way for beginners to try a completely new sport, the five euros for the year covers all training, professional coaches and equipment. Trinity has an excellent track record too, winning the intervarsities for the last four years straight.

Sign language is great too (good call Larianne!), there are courses for beginners and intermediate levels and you get a certificate at the end.

There was indeed a proposed society this year, but it wasn't given provisional status, as it was felt that the society's aims would fall within the remit of the already-existing Theological Society (Theo).

    Oh yes, that's a given. :)

I had my qualifications as a diver before I started at Trinity. The club is very well run and consists of students and graduates so there is a good mix of people in there. The training is excellent and the cheapest you'll get it any where. I couldn't afford to dive in Ireland with any other club. They dive constantly throughout the summer and have two or three trips during term time - the Cross-over trip in October (for those who already have their qualifications) and the Novice Trip in March (date next year might be changed).

There's info on the website: www.dusac.org or you can PM me. I was on the committee last year.

As captain of the Judo club, I'm not going to pass up this opportunity to heavily plug it.

Judo is a martial art and sport that can be taken up as an absolute beginner, regardless of your age, fitness level, strength, sex, or sporting experience. We cater for all levels and have a very experienced coach. Every year we send teams to the intervarsities and everyone, complete beginners and experienced folk alike, does extremely well.

It's excellent for getting in shape, making friends, and learning how to defend yourself. We always make an effort to include new members, and at the end of every year we always take on new members to the committee, so there are no cliques in the club. The best part is that we don't charge a mat fee, so you never have to pay for training.

The website is http://www.judo.tcdlife.ie/ but it needs to be updated. Feel free to send me a PM if you would like any more information!

(Asking this for both a friend and for my own information)

What's the story with joining a sports club as a graduate (but not a continuing postgrad or whatever)? If you have a gym membership, can you still do the scuba diving classes and whatnot?

I'm not sure about other facilities, but if the sport is practised in the Sport Centre I'm pretty sure you have to pay a membership fee to DUCAC.

No doubt our hairy captain(chair) will have a stand organised of freshers. AFAIK there's no room yet, but its all virtual anyways.

Ah, cool. I was checking out the website earlier today, €180 isn't too bad if you get a decent amount of dives in during the year. I see that there is a limit of 32 new members, is that usually oversubscribed?

As for what I'll be joining ... besides my interest in the sub aqua club, I'll be joining badminton again, and might join SF/netsoc if I get around to it as I'd like to play some LANs.

Well the fee is for all the training, which is good value. You do have to pay for trips away and petrol money for taking the boat out if diving out in Dublin bay, but that is usually €5-6 euro. The club provides use of wetsuits and tanks, regs for training but you are meant to start buying your own stuff the longer you are in the club - things like weight belts, gloves, masks, fins etc. But that's usually when you realise you want to keep diving!

Yeah, there is usually great interest to join. They usually just fill up the spaces. They did a 'Try A Dive' last year the week after Freshers. They'll be doing the same thing again. Good way to see if its something you want to do.

    Hey there,

The society I would hugely recommend to any incoming Fresher is Trinity VDP. They have over 20 charitable activities in local communities and are always looking for new volunteers. Everyone is really welcoming and it's a fantastic way to meet new people. VDP adds a completely new dimension to your life and it's one I'll always be grateful to have found. It can serve as an escape from your everyday college life and at times it can be the highlight of your week.

They have their 'Intro Night' on September 22nd at 7pm (Venue TBC) and they'll have a stand during Freshers Week where you can talk to volunteers aswell.

Check out their new website @ www.trinityvdp.com for a bit more info!

Look forward to talking to anyone who's interested in joining or even having just for the chats:).

    Thanks a million

You don't need experience to join the scuba diving club as they train you up. I sure its the shame for all the sports club. They have varying levels of experience in the clubs.

You definitely don't need to have any previous experience of water polo to join and if you're big into swimming then you're well on your way already! The majority of both the mens and womens teams only took up water polo when they began college so nearly everyone was asking themselves the same question when they first joined! Swimming and Water Polo are all one club so chances are that you'll get roped into trying out water polo if you go swimming ;)

That's a shame, UCD seems to have a pretty strong humanist society. Even though he eventually cancelled on them, they still managed to get James Randi interested in doing a talk there. Do you have any idea of the society's aims and why they were too close to the Theo? Proposing humanism as a complete alternative to theism shouldn't be within the remit of a theological society. Thanks for the info anyway!

Gonna plug the GAA club here...

I know TCD isn't the usual place GAA people think of coming to, but a big effort is being made to make it competitive....

Last year the Senior Hurlers made it to a league final and championship semi.... it shouldn't really be too long before we're playin Fitzgibbon hopefully..

So if anyone out there has any questions regarding the Mens Hurling/Football, Ladies Hurling/Football or Handball, or even just about the club in general or the craic to be had don't be afraid to PM me...

He means lifesaving as in water rescue. The Swimming Club website says that unfortunately it does not offer courses at present, but it was last updated in 2008, so who knows, perhaps they do now. The lifeguards in the pool are sports centre staff.

I'm on the committee for the Singers Society this year so I suppose I should pimp it here!

Singers is one of the choral societies at TCD. It consists of two choirs. One a mixed choir and the other an all-female choir. There is also some suggestions for an all male chamber group this year too! We perform twice in the year, once at the end of first semester and again just before easter usually. The range of music is really broad and well chosen by the excellent conductors. Here an example of one of the pieces that we perform a couple of times last year: http://db.tt/2IMClGt

Apart from the end-of-term performances we have also teamed up with the orchestra in the last two years for their christmas performances and the really successful Daft Punk concert.

Two trips are being planned for this year (one will hopefully involve going abroad :D ). In general the society is really welcoming and we have a lot of freshers joining each year! (there's a short audition with one of the conductors at some point in freshers week). So if you've any interest in joining a choir (even if you've never done so before!) Singers is a great society to get involved in so come find us in freshers week!

Most societies wipe their mailing lists so you have to rejoin the societies you joined in the previous year.

The idea behind Q Soc this year is actually to be far more accessible and inclusive and to reduce the idea of it being cliquey and to better represent our members who fit outside the LGBT spectrum. The move was prompted by our members and everyone so far has been really positive towards it.

Our events this year are very diverse so that we can offer something for everyone from big name guests like Patrick Wolf to film screenings to our daily coffee hours to a monthly club night, QUAKE, run by the society and everything in between! We also have lots of events organised with other societies including Players and Theo Soc so that it's easier for people to access us. We're also organising events including a big five-a-side soccer tournament with LGBT societies in other colleges so that people can link with students in other colleges.

Also to make it even easier for nervous Freshers to access us, they can avail of our "Introductions" scheme whereby they can meet a committee member for a chat before coming to the society if they want. We're also running a speed-friending event during Freshers so that people can get to know each other.

All in all, we think Q Soc is going to be a really positive and very accessible thing for LGBT students and their friends in Trinity!

Ah, but is there something like a Re-Freshers' week where I can sign up to all these, or do I have to go about emailing everyone, or do I show up during Freshers'? Or do I just over-complicate things through boards.ie?
