Major Equipment Changes over years

Ok well I gave up playing regular Golf for about 11 years and only got back into it proper this year again...

Anyway I kept my old clubs from all this way from 1997..They were a Burner Bubble Driver and Callaway Irons very like the ones below in pictures.

Anyway at the time I remember a few my friends envy that I had the best clubs (or one the best) set of clubs in game.

Anyway all this time I stuck with these clubs they were still in good(ish) condition, but decided it was time maybe to try something new and I suppose keep up with modern technology

Anyway my younger brother bought a Ram FX set (about 240euro including bag) and asked me to come with him to driving range to check them out.

Man have times changed. I was hitting the driver 30-35 yards more and the irons were far more forgiving. Hitting it straighter but also able to produce fades and intentional hooks easier as well as hitting ball high and low easier too.

The thing is the RamFX set I was playing would be in the lower scale of club market today compared to my old clubs which been expensive back in 1997

Was just wondering have people really seen that big change in there game from 10-20 years ago???(more question for us older folk:P) I presume everybody would have I guess

Also the balls. The Pro V1'S seem lot more durable then the balatas in 90's..

Anyway would be just interested in what you seen as the big changes over the years and do you now enjoy Golf more because of it?

Personally I could once of course it does not get out of hand and all.. But It nearly made me addicted to go play again asap.

Today's equipment definately makes the game easier - and if you look at the courses as well, they've gotten longer to cope with this. The 4th home on my home club (Tramore) used require "2 long carries" over drains and a valley. Before the course was done up this hole had gone out of date - it had become a fairly short par 4. You could drive to within 50 yards of the green without much difficulty and just pitch on.

I was in a similar position to yourself, played as a junior and packed it up when i went to college in 97. Back then i couldn't hit a driver for the life of me. A buddy of mine ( now a club pro ) had the burner bubble you have, and i couldn't even hit that. But now that i have taken it back up within the last year, using a new driver i'm actually able to hit it. So much so, some of my older playing parnters who gave up on ever being able to hit a driver have started using a driver again with great results. These guys stuck to the 3 wood off the tee, but now they are delighted with themselves.

I guess my estimation on distances and the like would be a little skewed as i packed it up when i was a teen, and now i'm a hairy assed man so any gain on distance is more down to my physical size more than the clubs i'm using.

I remember caddying for my brother in the club championship semi final one year, i was 15 or 16 so thats 20 years ago:(,it went to a sudden death and after a great drive i remember telling him that a 6iron wasnt enough for his second shot, he went with a 5iron which was slightly long.my point is that same hole(1st on mahonys point)is now a drive and SW,some lads can drive pretty close to it down wind. That is just 1 example, technology has changed Mahonys Point from a reasonably challenging course into a driver and wedge course.
Technology has ruined many a good golf course imo
(having said that im always changing equipment:confused:)

LOL, I had one of those bubble burners. My first "decent" driver. It looked well and was popular with better golfers so I bought it. Could not hit the thing consistently!

Don't have experiences of this personally but think myself that it's a level playing field for all golfers and is just as enjoyable now, it's around the green that counts eh?:D

Coursescan keep up by adding tree's and hazards to make people think about clubs they use to tee off.
