Colleague is a petty thief

A colleague moved over after having spent some time in the UK last year.

He is very proud of having left the country with a lot of debt they can't chase him for. Before leaving, he signed contracts for every piece of electronic equipment imaginable, two iPhones, some other mobiles, laptop, desktop, netbook, playstation, wii etc, received it and left the UK without leaving an address.  It's something he repeatedly boasts about and it seems his debt will expire after five years so will face no long term consequences if he ever goes back. It's definitely not a money issue since he is well off, earning a good salary with no commitments.

Pricks like this make life complicated for every honest person signing up for anything. Having heard his story of the 'free' toys he got for the 10th time, I wonder what is stopping me from sending  a letter to a few UK mobile phone companies with his Irish address.  Would you do it?

Does it really bother you that much that you would take the time to write these letters?

Even if it does, how do you go about finding the companies he has done this to?

To be honest,in my experience when people are that full of bluster, they are usually talking out of their hat.

Fair enough, he is a rat for doing what he says he did but it's his business. Some day his past will catch up with him, it always does.

I know he is probably hard to listen to but you'd be better off turning a deaf ear. Otherwise you will come across as jealous and begrudging.

I just had a thought, maybe I am wrong.

Under UK law, I think that after being legally declared bankrupt, your debts are discharged after five years.

Legging it to Ireland to avoid paying your debts isn't quite the same as being legally declared bankrupt. He mightn't be so "in the clear" as he would like to think.
