    I'm trying to get information together for a video project for next year at college. I'm completing a BSc Hon. in multimedia.
    I need to know the total number of licenses in 2010 and in what categories they were issued in.

    I.E. Shotgun, Handgun, Rifle, and restricted firearms.

    Or where to look for this info.

    any help please on this.

    cheers

    Call me a cynic if you will, but every time I hear that somebody wants a head count of firearms owners, I reach for my 'WHY?' T-shirt.

    From my own hard-earned and costly experience, head-counts like this usually result in somebody, somewhere, getting shafted.

    The headcount's been maintained since 1925 in Ireland tac, looking to read it won't have much effect either way. Besides, it's not like it's not been watched quite a bit...

    [shrug]. Must be my Jewish upbringing and total distrust of head-counters of any kind and for any reason.

    Cheers for the offer Nigel and I will take you up later on as the Project proceeds. I'll be looking to take interviews with people in the "Know" so to speak.

    I'm hoping to make a video/DVD from the Irish aspect on shooting and hunting.

    Probably won't work. The DoJ doesn't keep that information, the Gardai do and they're exempt from the FoI. You might get better luck asking via a parlimentary question, but last time it was asked, the information wasn't available:

    I have this data from Guns in Ireland 2011 that states

    "Number of Registered Firearms
    The number of registered guns in Ireland is reported to be 233,120"
    Broken down as
    Rifles = 54,000
    Shotguns = 177,00
    Handguns = 1,842

    With the Garda reported to have between 3,000 and 14,390 firearms.
    And unlawfully held firearms estimated at >150,000

    But all this data is from 2006/2009 and a great many older firearms were handed up because of the new licensing regulations that came in 2009/2010. From the Garda Annual Rirearms Review for 2009-2010 it states that 45,000 old firearms from the old system were cancelled and distroyed.

    Garda Annual Rirearms Review for 2009-2010 details:
    Firearms Certificates Issued from 1st August 2009 to 31" December 2010
    Firearm Certificates 161,994
    Restricted Firearm Certificates - Handguns (Pistols and Revolvers) 397
    Restricted Firearm Certificates - Rifles, shotguns, crossbows etc. 199
    Limited Firearm Certificates 22,553
    Training Firearm Certificates 156
    Substitute Firearms Certificates 2,146
    Total Firearms Certificates Issued 187,445

    With a futher 19,920 applications were still to be renewed at that time.

    This stated that the exsisting one year licenses that totaled 245,000

    I don't think I'll get any better details than this so I'll go with this infomation.

    cheers

    If your 'up-to-date' figures are as 'exact' as those of the supposed/reported number of firearm by AGS, then I don't hold out much hope for you.

    I think you'll concur that there is a substantial difference between the two figures of firearms that THEY themselves are supposed to have.

    If THEY don't know, within 11,390, how many they have, what chance is there for the numbers held by anobody else?

    So much for the 'Freedom of Information Act', eh?

    That infomation is taken from Guns in Ireland and it can't be taken as gospel but the numbers from the Justice dept. should be about right and correct.
