I missed my stop on the Luas and was subsequently fined because the next stop was ouside of my ticket zone, is it worth appealing this fine?

On what grounds can you appeal it?

I was on the phone and it was rush hour, I'm not sure of the grounds of appeal however if it went to court I would argue it was not equitable I suppose,

That's pretty iffy for you i would think. It would be different if the fault was on their behalf.

If your job/home is closer to the "missed" stop, you could use that fact in your appeal, you'd have a better chance of winning an appeal on the basis that it was a genuine mistake and you weren't deliberately evading the fare. The flipside of that is if your home/job is closer to the stop that you did get fined at you won't have a leg to stand on.

You should have been aggressive OP and acted like a skanger.
The staff would have just put you off the Luas

They only fine the easy targets like people coming home from work

Of course they are correct to issue these people fines but it's galling to see the skangers who can't produce and just mouth off not get the same treatment

    Sorry, bit offtopic

Does anyone know if a genuine mistake is grounds for appeal?

It is definitely NOT. Your appeal would be for clemency based on genuine error, and proof you could not have wished to proceed further than "your" stop e.g. living near the proper stop.

OP, my wife forgot to tag on one morning when boarding and got a fine. She appealed it and got off on the grounds that they were able to check back on the history of the tag-pass and see that she always got on and off at the same stops every day Mon-Fri without fail. She did, however get a pretty stern warning that were would be no further allowances made.

It's a little different from your situation in that you must prove you didn't have the intention to travel further than your ticket allowed, but my point is that the appeals guys are human!

    Advocating abusive behaviour isn't acceptable.

Maybe they could provide a service like in primary school where your mobile phone is confiscated for the day if it interferes with your concentration.
