TV reception - how to get it?

Moved into a new house a few weeks ago. The people sometime before us has Sky (dish on the wall at the back of the house) and there is a cable socket from it (I'm assuming) in the corner of one of the room, and there is not an aerial on the chimney.

Tried tuning TV to the socket in the wall, got one of the RTEs but with very poor reception. So I'm pretty sure that socket is connected to the Sky dish.

Don't have the money at the money to subscribe to €25+ a month for TV but would like to have the basic channels, RTE, TV3 maybe BBC if that can be done but not too important.

What are my options? I've seen people mention 'combi boxes' in other threads, what are they?

    Thanks for any help.

Yes a combi box will take one feed from a dish and another from an indoor or outdoor ariel..(depending on your area and signal strength)

Assuming the dish is still alligned correctly you will just need to pick up a receiver(along the lines of this..) and plug in the satellite cable for channels(bbc, itv, c4, film4.. and such)

You will then need to figure out what antenna option you will need for the domestic channels..(rte, tv3..) Maybe someone down that direction will be able to help..

In dublin where im located i only need an internal powered antenna.. quite small and sits behind the Tv..

Do a search of this forum and the satellite forum.. Plenty to read up on!!

One thing to note. If the tv is Saorview approved or compatible maybe all thats needed is an FTA sat box & aerial.
