If you compare the teams now to back then. My favourite team is Real Madrid and players like Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, Zidane, Figo, all gone from the club for a long time. Iker Casillas is the only player left from 2004. I know 6-7 years ago is sorta a long time, but I have matured in those years and am an adult now, and I can remember those years vividly. It seems like they are yesterday.

I know Man United aren't too bad, Rooney, Ferdinand, Evra, Giggs are still there. But look at Arsenal then. Henry, Fabregas, Bergkamp, Pires, Vieira. Does anyone else feel the same way?

I miss when you could see a bit of handbags at a match and at the end of it the ref spoke to the players and they all walked away. No red cards and 3 match bans for slightly brushing your hand off your opponents chest.

I know you're from Madrid so this may grit your teeth a little but to honestly answer your question : Not one bit.

Barca have been amazing to watch when they're on top form. Madrid, when Mou let's them come out of their shell have been scintillating and athletic and not only that we are privileged with watching two absolutely special players in Ronaldo and Messi. That says nothing for the other high bars set by other superstars today Iniesta, Xavi, Rooney, etc. Nope, I don't miss the past one bit.:D

anything to do with you being 6 or 7 years younger and perhaps more enthusiastic about football in general? my interest and passion for it is declining as i get older and am now older than most players.

plus the fact we have clubs like man city, who i abhor everything about and the game is littered with mercenaries like ronaldo, nasri, tevez etc.

the fact etoo is about to join some russian team no one has heard of purely for money symbolises what modern football is all about

Ronaldo and Nasri are far from mercaneries..........Ronaldo gave Utd 6 ish years, always said he wanted to go to Madrid.
Nasri wants to be a winner, medals, titles, personal accolades, can't blame a player for that i tell ya

Didn't Ronaldo say a few weeks ago he considered joining City? A whole two seasons after his dream move to Madrid, it could be argued that he realizes with the current Barca team he reckons he won't win trophies but I think the money might play a part.

Well I've only been watching football for the last 10/15 years, and this Barca team are by and far the best club team I've ever seen. Only the Galactico's compare, so really, football can only get worse imo. Even from a Spurs POV this is our best team certainly in my time, and probably even longer.
So no, I don't miss 6/7 years ago, but if you're a Real Madrid fan I can see why you would :)

Have to agree with this .

The playacting by players is also to be blamed .

Seems to me that some Refs want their time in the limelight aswell during some games .

But that discussion is for another thread .

I'm watching more ball now since i grab every chance I can , don't get much opportunity with two young kids , but when I do it my time :)

he never said anything like that. 'A source close to him' did, but don't let that stop you. He had more chance of winning trophies at United and moved to Madrid because it's his favourite team and said he'd never play for City though, but that doesn't help your argument i suppose...

He won a spanish cup last year i think.....
Ronaldo is not a good example to be used if OP wants to label players as mercanries...

No more scholes, keane, batistuta, maldini, figo, ronaldo, zidane, rui costa,nedved,cannavaro,desailly,thuram,lizarazu,kahn.....the list goes on and on,the players nowadays just dont match those lads maybe one or two.

I miss 1988, Aldridge, Whelan, Houghton, Barnes, Beardsley et al for Liverpool (don't miss Gary Ablett tho :pac:)

However back in those days you were lucky to have 2 live games a month on ITV (How did Elton Welsby make a living ) so I much prefer it now where, on a Sunday, you will have about 8-9 live games on tv from English, Scottish, Dutch, Italian, Spanish and Brazilian leagues.

I also miss Ronaldo (the real one), watching him on Eurogoals every Monday night for the season he was with Barcelona will forever be in my memory. For those of you who don't remember, here's what you missed out on (in work so I hope these videos are right!)

Ian Rush, Mickey Thomas (when at Arsenal) ... Effan Ekoku, Fat Nev (At Everton), Darren (Sicknote) Anderton, Jan aage Fjortoft (Jaysus ...remember swindon in the premier league....wimbledon) Vinny Jones and the crazy gang , Gazza, collymore !! ... Peter Schmichael - fantastic keeper back in the day.

Remember the defence for liverpool in the early 90's .... Razor Ruddock and Julian Dicks ...never forget that ruddock goal against Man Utd in the 3-3 game..... or the commentator shouting "Colleeeee moooorrrreeeee" when he scored against Newcastle in a 4-3 victory (92nd min)....had money on it and won so definately wont forget that.

fairly obvious that I'm a Liverpool fan !

Wow, major flashback watching those videos. I went to Barcelona on a school tour in 1997 and we were at one of those games. Barcelona vs Sevilla. They won 4-0 and he got two of the goals. Legend!

My interest has waned in the last few years mainly because of the playacting.

Watched Celtic Legends V Man Utd Legends on TV last week and some of those players could still do a job.

Roy Keane and Dion Dublin in particular stood out. Larsson scored a hat-trick and was still class.

when you think about it, around the year 2000 there were some absolutely unreal players . just off the top of my head: ronaldo, rivaldo, figo, zidane, keane, vieira, bergkamp, del piero, maldini, cannavaro, roberto carlos, giggs scholes, henry, thuram, inzaghi, totti, batistuta and more. there was some collection of talent at their peak around then. i dont think the current standard of player measures up to them . fair enough there are some pheneomenal players now but not in the same quantity as back then. the champions league was extremely competitive with the english teams, the galacticos, barcelona, a strong valencia team, bayern and the italians all competitive.

    Too much money
    Too much diving/playacting
    Too little loyalty

They threaten to ruin the game imo. Plus the Champions League has become the be-all and end-all to the detriment of other competitions. Nobody cares now about the League Cup, F.A. Cup or Europa League, it only generates any kind of interest if your team 'finds' themselves in the semi finals. If they are knocked out earlier you get the response of "Ah sure twas only the <insert name of competition> and now we concentrate on 4th place!!!"

International football is slowly dying too, seems to me nobody is that interested in it until you get to the actual World Cup Finals or Euro Championships.

I know what the OP means........

Back then I watched such hero's as Igor Biscan, Vladimar Smicer & Djimi Traore march to triumph in the Champions League with the odd hobbling of Harry Kewell thrown in aswell.

Football hasnt been the same since:p

Everyone getting all misty eyed :pac:

Like all sports, football evolves and the standard gets better and better and better all the time. In ten years time people will be complaining about how there are no players like Ronaldo, Messi, Xavi, Tevez etc when in the cold hard reality the next generation will probably be better. Football fans are slaves to the past.

I miss checking up the scores on teletext, and all the excitement that came with it. First thing you'd see would be an Irish goalscorer - they were always in green text. Scanning the page, trying to see what wasn't there last time you checked. Or suddenly seeing the list of pages go from 2 to 3 - then you knew a goal was coming up because the list had gotten longer, and you'd make private bets with yourself over who scored while you waited for the page to tick over.

Those were the days. Now it's too bloody easy, all you have to do is look at one of the thousands of apps on your phone that's bloody tiny and paper thin :(

People probably said that about Ronaldo ten years ago, ten years before that Maradona, then Cruyff, Pele, Di Stefano and so on. In ten years time there will be somebody faster than Usain Bolt and Michael Phelps. Thats how sport works.

There was quotes attributed to him claiming that but he strenuously denied them and said he never even had an interview with the newspaper.

Your right he prob didnt dream of playing for Arsenal but at least Arsenal are historically a big club. Nearly every player who plays these days is a mercenary with the odd exception, Scholes, Le Tissier, Giggs Iniesta. But the Tevez, Nasris of this world are mercenaries and saying there not is delusional.

A better team its still early days yet on that one, that will be judged at the end of the season.

Messi certainly not a mercenary - you could argue Fabregas not a mercenary, Stephen Gerrard, Jamie Carragher.

does it make you a mercenary to be ambitious and want to play for a club which tells you that if you join they can win things ?
    - or does it make you a mercenary if you want to goto the club that is playing well and has potential to win things ?

Does it make you a mercenary if a successful club pays astonishing amounts of money to get you to their club (because it in your contract and your "current" club want to benefit from selling you on)

The difference for me is if the club suddenly "comes into money" vs "earns money through success" .... if the club builds success and wishes to add you to bolster their squad - you are not a mercenary !

if the club "comes into money" and you join because of the lure of "potential" winning and financial package to boot ...in general you are joining because of the amount of money you can make in your time at the club - with the possibility of success (buying top quality players does not always mean buying success)

On pitch protests at Maguire, Collins in charge, slight financial issues, home games in Cork and Dalymount, McDonagh getting sent off, Gough, Payne, Quigley as players. Or...

Rovers winning the league, Successful fans takeover, Discover Ireland win at the first attempt, FAI Cup finals, Tallaght, Juventus, Madrid, Tallinn, crowds of 4,000-5,000, Bohs not picking up a single point in Tallaght, Twigg, Finn, Sheppard, Rice, Flynn kicking Bohs players and not being sent off, Shels, Longford and Cork squabbling in division one...

Lol I knew someone would pick up on the Le Tissier bit, but yuor right the players you mentioned are not mercenarys, including Fabregas he went back to his hometown, and his boyhood club.

But i still say the majoity of footballers are, the likes of Del Piero who stayed with Juve even when they got relegated is rare these days.

The problem is very few players no longer feel an affinity with the club there at. They are there for money first succes second, which has also kind of killed the connection between fans and players when fans know a lot of players feel no real passion for the club they love.

Look at the Champions League now. Juventus not even in it ATM, AC Milan a former shell of itself and not expected to win it. Valencia and Deportivo are not going to win it. The money is helping the EPL stay up there. I expect Man City to be entering it next season. I only think Barca, Man U, Real Madrid, Chelsea can win the Champions League this season.

I also agree on you with the list of players, so far ATM the list of stellar players doesn't take up as much space as in the above list. Maldini and Roberto Carlos as left back for example, 2 of them, and not one left back in the world today could tie their laces.
