    hey,

Just need some advice as i know **** all about iphones. I bought an iphone 4 off some fella on gumtree yesterday. Paid $600 AUSD, as opposed to $900 AUSD they cost from apple store.

I have a feeling i may have been stitched up. Brought it home and compared it to my mates one, his is definetely real. They are very similar but there is small differences everywhere. My texting thing is simply called "text" whereas his is called "messages". my camera is called "photo" whereas his is called "photos". As well as that it came with loads of apps etc that his didnt come with like skype, facebook and youtube. As well there is 4 songs already on it, all with Chinese writing etc.

The main thing is that it seems kind of slow, unresponsive. Everything from flicking across the screen to taking a photo is just slow compared to his. He seems to think it way be a software/jailbreak issue. I dont even know what jailbroken means! His modem firmware says "04.10.01" whereas mine says "01.59.00" I am correct in thinking its like him having Microsoft Office 2007 and me having 95? If i update to a latest version will it be faster/better? or is it that i have just bought a poxy fake? Let me know anyway. Cheers lads

Sounds like a fake. Plug it into iTunes and see if it recognizes it.
Or open the app store (If it has one)

Ive Been in Dalian , china , lots of times , the place is awash with these iphone rip-offs , yours sounds just like one.

In china you pick them up for anything between 40 to 80 euros. Your not the first to get caught !

    It's almost certainly a fake.
The different names on the apps could be doen if it was second hand.

But if your software version 1.xx.xx.x it must be fake. iOS 1.x was out years ago, there is no way an iphone 4 would have it loaded, ever. I don't think it would even work with an iphoen 4.

    Tough break

    ?????

He brought it home after be collected it, just like everyone would.
He paid AU$ as he is based in Australia. I would of thought that was obvious and not strange at all tbh.

    1. Where do you put the sim card? If the answer is under the battery - fake
    2. Is it a 4 and does it take a micro sim? If no - fake
    3. Does it take two sims? If yes - fake
    4. Can you remove the back and battery easily? If yes - fake
    5. Is your screen a much much lower resolution than your friends (even if you have a 4 and he a 3GS and vice versa) if yes - fake
    6. Does iTunes recognise it? If no - fake

    It's got a baseband of 01.59.00

that to me says it's a real one!

can you post some detailed pictures of it?

the icons having the wrong names, could simple be a jailbroken app that's allowed the previous user to change their names!

Got offered a fake one while sitting a in a coffee shop in Cavan. Could not tell it was fake till I turned it on. Screen resolution was crap. They wanted €200 for it. He had the box with all the book and leads etc.

Is there various levels of fake? Cause this was only clearly a fake when I compared it to my iPhones screen.

There are indeed levels of fake, was in a phone shop once and a girl was returning a case cos it didn't fit her White iPhone 4, this was 3 months before the White one was out, straight away I knew it was fake cos of that. But I asked if I could see it. In the hand it almost felt legit, but the bad screen, normal sim and removable back gave it away. She left in tears

    She'd paid 400 for it.

i never notived he said modem firmware (aka basband), I thought it was firmware.

OP can you compare the version number above this on the homescreen?

    Because of the mistake I had a re-read of the OP. Might not be fake;
My texting thing is simply called "text" whereas his is called "messages".
I searched for homescreen images, and I found lots with Text under the SMS icon.

    2196132507_bcd3499244.jpg

Then, I remembered that the first iphone only allowed SMS in this app, I searched ipone 1 and sure enough they all have that icon. It was changed to "messages" when MMS was added in v.3, its called iMessage in v.5
my camera is called "photo" whereas his is called "photos". As well as that it came with loads of apps etc that his didnt come with like skype, facebook and youtube. As well there is 4 songs already on it, all with Chinese writing etc.
    This just confused me.

The camera is called camera, not photo or photos in any version?
Strange apps just mean it isn't new, but doesn't mean its a fake.
Youtube comes as standard on all iphones? So are you sure your friends is real?

    Are they both iPhone 4s?
There's some questions above that should prove it for you.

My iphone 4 shipped with 01.59 - actually 2 of them did back when the ip4 first came out. I only last week sent back an ip4 to apple with bb 01.59.

As I've already said, I don't think he's been sold a dud, just an early ip4 jailbroken on a low version of iOS 4 that's bloated as hell.

Read my second post, I thought he meant iOS version, not BB version

Why would a hi phone have a modem baseband of 01.59.00 tho?

Pretty simple really, to make it look and appear real. Its just a meaningless line that a unwary buyer would look at and go "Yeap, real iPhones have that so this must be real" The OP has been sold a fake, I'd put €100 on it. But to be absolutely sure, plug it into iTunes.

    Exactly. 110% fake.

The reason your icons are named differently sounds like a winterboard skin to me.
Your on baseband 01.59 which would indicate you may be using ultrasn0w for carrier unlock, so best off checking that before updating your firmware through itunes and loosing the unlock.
what version does it say in gerenal-about?
If Cydia or the official App Store are on it its a real iPhone, or plug it into your computer if iTunes recognises it, its real.
Knock offs look completely different when compared to real iphones in weight/build quality, if you have the 2 phones together it would be obvious if it was a fake.
